Season Records (prior to Friday night’s games)

St. Louis Blues 29-13-7 (5th in the Western Conference)

Nashville Predators 31-17-4 (4th in the Western Conference)

Preds rookie Craig Smith is on a five-game points streak

Going into Friday night’s NHL action, only one point separated the fourth place Nashville Predators from the fifth place St. Louis Blues. The Blues host the Los Angeles Kings Friday night at Scottrade Center and hope to move ahead of the Predators by night’s end.

While the Blues and Predators are two of the hottest teams in the NHL, both teams entered Friday with losses to Eastern Conference teams from Pennsylvania. Tonight’s game against the Kings is the first game since the All-Star Break for St. Louis. Entering the break, St. Louis lost in a shootout against the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 24th.

Anders Lindback gave Pekka Rinne the night off as Nashville fell 4-1 to the Philadelphia on Thursday night. The Predators  hope to rebound with Rinne back in goal against their Central Division foes.

Nashville will have to use its home ice to the team’s advantage Saturday night. Entering Saturday’s game, the Predators have won 12 of their last 14 home games, with a total of 16 home wins on the season. While the Blues are almost unbeatable at home, away from St. Louis, the Blues have a mediocre 8-10-3 record.

Saturday’s game will be the second of three visits the Blues will make the Bridgestone Arena this season. The Predators boast a 21-11-7 all-time record against the Blues in Music City, including a 5-2-3 record since the 2008-09 season.

So far this year, Nashville has had St. Louis’ number. Nashville has won all three contests the teams have played so far. The two teams last met on December 30th in St. Louis. Nashville won 2-1 in a shootout. It was Martin Erat who scored the shootout winner for Nashville. Extra time was needed when the Blues were last in Nashville, too. On December 17th, the Predators were against victorious, but David Legwand’s shootout tally gave Nashville the edge, and the extra point. The first time the Predators and Blues hooked up this season was during opening weekend when the Predators doubled the Blues 4-2 on October 8th.
