The New York Rangers are eager to put the Carolina Hurricanes away in Game 5 of their series in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Carolina was on sweep watch coming into Game 4 down 3-0 in the series. The Hurricanes narrowly escaped disaster in a 4-3 victory that kept them alive in the series. One Rangers player shared his thoughts on Brady Skjei’s important goal.

According to The Athletic’s Peter Baugh , Jacob Trouba spoke on Brady Skjei’s first power play goal, which was Carolina’s first of the series. “Sometimes you tip your cap,” Trouba said. “It was a good shot. I don’t think (it was) necessarily a massive breakdown by the PK. Just a good shot sometimes. Tip your cap.”

The goal in question came with about three minutes left in regulation. The score was tied 3-3 and Skjei’s goal ultimately became the difference and saved the Hurricanes from being swept in the series. Before Skeji’s goal, Carolina was 0-16 on shots during power plays during the series. They will need to take advantage of these opportunities if they want a chance against New York in Game 5.

Trouba also spoke on what it meant to lose the game that could have advanced them to the next round. He seemed to be in high spirits and focused on the next game in the series.

“You’ve got to keep your confidence, for sure,” Trouba added. “Probably not going to win all of them in a row. That’s a good team. They’ve got their chances. We’ve played four really close games. Turn our attention to Game 5 and try to close them out in 5.”

New York will get its chance to win the series on Monday night in front of their home crowd.

Few teams recover from a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series, but the Hurricanes will give it their all until the very end.

The Rangers have looked strong throughout the series and had won eight of their last 10 games against the Hurricanes coming into Game 4.

Carolina has pride, as well as the motivation of not being eliminated, to motivate them in Game 5.

The New York Rangers entered the series as underdogs, but have shown plenty of fight. In fact, according to The Athletic, the Rangers entered the series with only a 34% chance to win. If they can achieve victory in Game 5, they will win the series in an outcome that The Athletic rated an 8% chance to occur. They almost pulled off the least likely event (3% chance) of sweeping Carolina in four games.

Considering how dominant the Rangers have been in special teams, it is no surprise they find themselves on top of the series.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour knows that his squad needs to improve on power plays or they won’t survive the series.

“Listen, you’ve got to give them credit, I think that’s the first thing you do,” Brind’Amour said heading into Game 4. “They’re doing their system really well, knowing when to pressure and when not, and we just haven’t handled that the way we normally do. I think that’s really the beginning of it.”

Game 5 of the series will take place in New York at 7PM ET on Monday.
