Rangers signs Jeff Halpern 1 year / $700 000

— Renaud P Lavoie (@RenLavoieRDS) July 10, 2012

Jeff Halpern, 36 years of age, played in 69 games with the Washington Capitals during the 2011-12 season, recording four goals and 12 assists in that time. He's played in the National Hockey League for a total of twelve seasons, spending time in five different cities.

Halpern is up there in age, but I'm assuming GM Glen Sather's thought process here is fourth line center. Jeff obviously brings experience and that veteran nature that is important on a younger team. However, was this a necessary signing? I guess we won't know until after the one-year deal expires, but at just $700,000, we cannot complain much.

Interesting enough, the Rangers have made several depth signings now, yet still have not filled in the 'big' scorer spot on the top six that has been talked about. Normally for Slats we see the major signing first, followed by the smaller additions. But this summer he seems to be working backward, partly due to the Rick Nash scenario in Columbus.

While it's been an extremely quiet July for the Rangers as compared to previous summers, you know Slats is on the phones almost everyday looking for that additional 30-goal scorer. In the meantime, he's filling the depth spots that the team lacked in the postseason of this past year.

I don't have any issues with what Sather has done so far this summer. At least not yet.
