The Detroit Red Wings have placed defenseman Brendan Smith on short-term injured reserve with what is being called a “slight shoulder injury”.
The injury occurred during a fight with 41 seconds remaining in the third period of the Red Wings’ 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. With the game already well out of hand and Red Wings on their way to their third straight victory, Smith dropped the gloves with Edmonton’s Will Acton. Acton seemed to go right after Smith who had just exited the box following a roughing call for going after skilled, young, Oiler winger Nail Yakupov. Both players seemed to swing wildly before Smith lost his balance, with Acton falling on top of him. Smith could be seen reaching for his left shoulder or collarbone area as he skated off the ice.
According to Red Wings’ beat writer Ansar Khan, Smith suffered a slightly separated shoulder and will be out one to two weeks. Smith reported feeling very sore on Sunday.
