Heading the unfortunate news of the day category is a story about a Red Wings 2007 draft pick, Bryan Rufenach, dying while traveling in Switzerland.  Rufenach, a seventh round pick, had played in Toledo and most recently with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the ECHL.

The 23 year-old defenseman was said to be electrocuted, but no other details of his death are known according to Jason Bain of the Lindsay Post in Canada.

Griffins head coach Curt Fraser had this to say:

“Bryan was an up-and-coming player in our organization who improved a great deal this season and had a bright future ahead of him.  He was a really good kid – smart and quiet – who understood his role, worked hard every day he came to the rink and was a pleasure to coach. We’re going to miss him.”

2011 was Rufenach’s first year in Grand Rapids.  He appeared in 13 games with the club as a rookie, contributing two assists and 11 penalty minutes.
