I got into something of a Twitter tiff regarding the play of one Stephen Weiss, because I'm with the Free Press's Helene St. James regarding the fact that we've all ignored Weiss's status as having neither played in more than 17 games nor probably having returned to full strength--or confidence--regarding his surgically-repaired left wrist (perhaps exacerbated by the broken pinky he's apparently playing trough)--as factors in Weiss's incredibly slow and bumpy adaptation to the Red Wings' system of play... But I cannot deny that Weiss, who's admittedly struggled to find his stride while learning Mike Babcock's incredibly strenuous-on-centers defensive system (as well as the Wings' puck possession system as opposed to the Panthers' dump-and-not-chase system from age 18-30), has struggled. Weiss has 2 goals, 2 penalty minutes and is a -6 over the course of 11 games played with the his second NHL employer, and the "by comparison" s...

Did Daniel Alfredsson make the right decision to become a Red Wing?

Last Wednesday night the Ottawa Senators came into Joe Louis Arena and throttled the Detroit Red Wings to a final score of 6-1. Right from the opening face-off the Senators dominated, it wasn’t even close. Jimmy Howard was pulled a little over 14 minutes into the game after allowing three goals on just eight shots. As Howard made his way into the locker room, most of the crowd...

Senators rout Alfredsson, Red Wings

DETROIT -- After all of the hype surrounding Daniel Alfredsson's first game against his former team, his current team came out and laid a collective egg. The Red Wings looked like they were skating in quicksand while the Ottawa Senators were busy scoring goals. Seemingly before the Wings got started, the Senators had taken a 3-0 lead on goals by Eric Gryba, Jason Spezza and...

Eklund: Spark Plug Anyone? Tootoo drawing interest if Wings keep some contract.

There are several things percolating this morning, but one I find interesting on a few levels is the apparent availability of the Red Wing's Jordin Tootoo...to be honest even writing "The Red Wing's" Jordin Tootoo feels a bit odd to this writer who remembers Tootoo more for antagonizing the Wings as a feisty and very popular Nashville Predator... Tootoo is available...

Red Wings Friday practice post: Wings split Zetterberg and Datsyuk, promote Tatar to top six

The Red Wings returned to practice in search of more scoring ahead of tomorrow night's game against the Rangers (7 PM, FSD/MSG/NHL Network U.S., 97.1 FM, and tomorrow's the Wings "Hockey Fights Cancer" game/Shawn Burr bone marrow drive game), and it's not exactly surprising that the Wings made some changes to kick-start its offense: Tatar in Red. Could...

Alfredsson opens up on life as a Red Wing and meeting his old team

From helmet to the bottom of his socks Daniel Alfredsson was dressed all in red here Monday surrounded by the sea of red seats in the venerable Joe Louis Arena. There was no “C” or “A” on his new winged wheel Detroit Red Wings jersey and to the naked eye there wasn’t a single “Alfredsson” sweater anywhere in the crowd as Detroit played host to the San Jose Sharks. Instead...

HBO’s ’24/7′ Featuring Red Wings, Leafs Leading up to 2014 Winter Classic Begins Dec. 14

One of the casualties of the NHL lockout last year was the Winter Classic, which has become the league’s marquee regular-season event. The cancellation also included HBO not being able to air their popular show called “24/7″, which gives fans a behind the scenes look at the players, coaches and management of the two teams participating in that year’s Winter Classic. This...

Red Wings overnight report: goal-starved Wings face tough road ahead; on Backman and Mantha

The Detroit Red Wings will resume practicing after an "off day" on Thursday, and a team that's dropped successive games to Phoenix, San Jose (albeit by a shootout decision) and then Ottawa on Wednesday needs to get its offensive and defensive acts together as soon as possible if the team hopes to improve upon a suddenly-middling 6-4-and-1 record. The Wings' task...

Cotsonika discusses Daniel Alfredsson’s acclimation and acclimitization to life as a Red Wing

I'm trying to keep as much of the hubbub surrounding tonight's "reunion game" between the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings (7:30 PM, FSD/TSN/TVA Sports/97.1 FM) in the game-day entry and the Ouellet recall entry, and I'd prefer to not post every dang Alfredsson story on its own given that Monday night, Tuesday afternoon and evening and even this morning...

Red Wings-Senators game-day update post: the circus comes to town; Kronwall ‘nicked,’ Helm improving

The Detroit Red Wings face off against Daniel Alfredsson's former employer in the Ottawa Senators tonight (7:30 PM, FSD/TSN/TVA Sports/97.1 FM), and toes have already been stepped upon: Alfredsson story not that big in Detroit. Rangers-Red Wings Preview

The Detroit Red Wings have been strugging to find the back of the net over the last week. For the New York Rangers, it's been a season-long trend. The Red Wings will try to snap a three-game skid Saturday night when they host the Rangers, whose offense has been lifeless during a season-opening nine-game trip that concludes with this matchup. Thursday's 2-1 loss at Philadelphia...

Ottawa Senators knock off Detroit Red Wings 6-1

Captain Present gave Captain Past and his new team a pounding Wednesday night at The Joe. It may not have been the “fruit basket and bottle of wine” Montreal’s Lars Eller gave Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins when he said the Oilers looked like a “junior team” a day earlier but the Senators sure looked like they used as bulletin board material Daniel Alfredsson’s original...

Manny Legace joins Fox Sports Detroit’s broadcasting team as a collegiate analyst

Interesting news from the Free Press's James Jahnke: Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender Manny Legace has been hired as a college hockey analyst for Fox Sports Detroit for the 2013-14 season, the network announced today. Legace won the 2002 Stanley Cup with the Wings and also spent time with the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes during an 11...

One more reminder: the Red Wings’ Saturday game against the Rangers is ‘Hockey Fights Cancer Night’

From DetroitRedWings.com's Christy Hammond, here's a friendly reminder about the charitable thrust of Saturday's game against the New York Rangers: The Detroit Red Wings will host Hockey Fights Cancer Night presented by Van Andel Institute - Purple CommunitySM this Saturday, Oct. 26, when the Wings host the New York Rangers at 7:00 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit &...
