DETROIT - JUNE 12: Johan Franzen #93 of the Detroit Red Wings warms up before playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Seven of the 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Finals at Joe Louis Arena on June 12, 2009 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)
With the Red Wings having Thursday’s game pretty much in hand (up 4-1) with eight minutes left in the third period, Johan Franzen thought it was the apropos time to take a shot at Blues winger David Perron. Usually in hockey, “taking a shot” amounts to running a guy with his head down or giving a guy a nice two-hander with the stick.  Franzen’s definition of “taking a shot” resulted in him spearing Perron in the midsection.  Perron hit Franzen from behind into the glass behind the net (as happens dozens of times in any hockey game) and Franzen took exception. “The Mule” received a five-minute major and a match penalty/game misconduct.  You can bet that Gary Bettman’s cronies will be reviewing the tape. The Wings and Blues have already played each other three times in the season’s first ten games.  The Wings have taken the last two, including their 5-1 win tonight.  Goalie Petr Mrazek got his first career win in his NHL debut. Here’s the clip of Franzen’s stab at Perron:
