The last two days have been particularly gloomy from a Red Wings fan's perspective--or at least mine--so, facing a content-light morning, I'm going to try to look at the bright side of things. So excuse the gritted teeth and false smile from a very gloomy-feeling blogger... As the Free Press's Steve Schrader reminds us, the Wings' training camp may have been indefinitely postponed, but at least Wings fans can skate at the Joe tomorrow, on Tuesday and on Wednesday: Nobody else is using Joe Louis Arena, so the Red Wings are opening the ice to fans. There will be four 1-hour open skates, Monday through Wednesday, 11 a.m.-noon, noon-1 p.m., 7-8 p.m. and 8-9. It's all free, including parking, but you have to bring your skates and register at detroitredwings.com/openskate while space is available. Some bargain-price food will be available at the Joe, or you can bring your own. No pucks or sticks allowed. And while fans like you and me might have sho...

Pavel Datsyuk Head-Butts Puck Into Net During KHL Game (Video)

Pavel Datsyuk has a flair for the dramatic regardless of what continent he's on. Datsyuk, who is one of the many NHL players currently playing overseas during the NHL lockout, showed that he can put the puck into the net in more ways than one. The Red Wings center managed to dish out a soccer style header to tickle the twine on Monday, showing once again that he's a special...

Detroit Red Wings' Senior VP Fined $250,000 for Comments Made on Lockout

Jim Devallano, the Detroit Red Wings' Senior Vice President, was fined by the NHL on Saturday for comments that he made in an interview earlier this week. In an interview with Island Sports News, Devallano shed some light on the lockout and gave his opinion on some of the contracts that were handed out in the offseason. "It's very complicated and way too much for the...

Red Wings fined for exec's comments

The NHL has fined Detroit Red Wings senior vice president Jim Devellano for an interview he did this week about the lockout. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says in a statement Saturday that the league and team agree Devellano's comments were not appropriate, authorized or permitted under NHL bylaws. Devellano was quoted by the Island Sports News, saying his solution to end...

Red Wings fined $250,000 for lockout comments

The Detroit Red Wings were fined $250,000 for comments made by senior vice president Jim Devellano regarding the lockout, according to The Sporting News. Devellano told Island Sports News earlier this week that players should take the owners' proposal of 43 percent of the league's revenue instead of the 57 percent they currently get. "The owners can basically be...

Red Wings overnight report: on Devellano’s comments, Ericsson’s options, the Griffins and…things.

The Red Wings' locked-out players will take part in their first informal practice in Troy today, and many of you will be skating in their place at Joe Louis Arena over the next three days, which seems strange...But this lockout has been nothing if not full of "weirdness." Just as it feels like we've been at this for much longer than eight days, for me, it feels...

CP: NHL fines Red Wings for Jimmy Devellano’s remarks

Given the tone of Red Wings VP Jimmy Devellano's comments about players being little more than cattle grazing at the owners' ranches, this isn't surprising, per the CP's Chris Johnston: The NHL has fined the Red Wings for Jim Devellano's "cattle" remark earlier this week. — Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) September 22, 2012 ...

Pavel Datsyuk Takes His Magic Overseas, Heads Puck Into The Net

In the hockey world, everyone knows that Pavel Datsyuk is some kind of supernatural freak. Due to the NHL lockout, Datsyuk signed with the KHL’s CSKA Moscow along with Nashville’s Most Valuable Partier, Alexander Radulov. In a game Monday night against Avangard Omsk (wtf?), Datsyuk tracked the rebound of his denied shot and headed the puck into the net soccer-style. Most players...

Red Wings mid-day news: something good happened in Traverse City today (and more European news)

On "no training camp" morning, members of the Red Wings' coaching and player development departments did head to Traverse City to hold a youth hockey clinic at Centre Ice Arena, as chronicled by RedWingsTV, and at this point, being able to report some sort of positive news is a welcome relief and a source of hope:   The Wings' Twitter account illustrated...

Red Wings European player news: CSKA holds Datsyuk presser; Jokerit Helsinki holds Filppula presser

I'm about to engage in a significant amount of paraphrasing due to foreign-language fun: On Sunday afternoon, CSKA Moscow held a joint press conference to formally introduce Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk and Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov as members of the team. CSKA's website posted a photo gallery from the event, a 13:27 YouTube clip (in Russian) of the...

Travis Yost: Red Wings Senior VP Sheds Light Into CBA Negotiations; Collusion Issues?

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- Red Wings VP Jimmy Devellano has been around the block for a while. He's entering his thirtieth season with the Red Wings and forty-fifth(!) in the National Hockey League. Naturally, he's going to have an opinion or two about the CBA negotiations and where they're headed. Of course, by voicing his opinions to Scott Harrigan...

Video: Pavel Datsyuk’s Soccer-Style Goal Disallowed in CSKA Moscow Debut

Pavel Datsyuk sported a different jersey Monday, but he was up to his old tricks in his first game with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Continue reading →

Tim Panaccio: The NHL and The Big Valley

And you all thought Mike Babcock had a big mouth, no? Not even he could muster up a fine as large as the one that his bosses got hit with Saturday by the NHL - $250,000. Reading Red Wings senior veep Jim Devellano's comments on IslandsSportsNews.com, I kind felt like we were part of The Big Valley. With Devellano in the role of Jarrod Barkley, played by Richard Long...

Stalemate

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Red Wings forward Danny Cleary warned today that the lockout that is threatening the start of the NHL season might linger on and on. "I think people don't think it can go a year," Cleary said after several Wings held an independent skate at Troy Sports Center. "As players, we think it can. Maybe...

Jimmy D’s post-script

The Island News's Scott Harrigan's interview with Red Wings VP Jimmy Devellano's been tossed around like a hot potato, with each and every person who's re-listed it treating Devellano's inflammatory comments regarding players as "cattle" who are generously allowed to graze at the owners' "ranches," his allusions to collusion on NHL owners...
