The Red Wings announced Tuesday that they’ve agreed to terms on a new deal with speedy forward Darren Helm. The terms of the contract include a 4-year deal worth $8.5 million dollars. Helm earned $1 million in 2011-12 and was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st. His new contract has a salary-cap hit of $2.125 million. Throughout his time in Detroit thus far, Helm gives the Wings a spark with his speed, forechecking ability and physical play. Because of this he’s become a tremendous asset on the penalty kill unit and was sorely missed during this past season’s playoffs when he went down with a lacerated tendon on his right forearm. A fifth round selection of the Wings in 2005 (132nd overall), Helm has 32 goals and 83 points in 248 career regular season games. He also has 10 goals and 16 points in 65 playoff games.
