In a fitting show of respect for one of the greatest defensemen to ever play in the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings will retire Nicklas Lidstrom’s jersey number- 5. Lidstrom played his entire 20-year NHL career in Detroit, winning four Stanley Cups and seven Norris Trophies as the league’s top defenseman. He was also voted to 12 All-Star teams.
Lidstrom’s #5 will join six other numbers retired by the Red Wings; Terry Sawchuk’s #1, Ted Lindsay’s #7, Gordie Howe’s #9, Alex Delvecchio’s #10, Sid Abel’s #12, and Steve Yzerman’s #19. Lidstrom’s jersey will ascend to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena on March 6th, 2014, before Detroit’s game against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.
