It's safe to assume Erik Karlsson is going to post more points than any other defenseman this season. In fact, he's a remarkable 25 points up on current runner-ups Dustin Byfuglien and Brian Campbell. The question now: where will he finish among all skaters? With 78 points on the year, Karlsson is just two shy of the all-time mark for a Swedish blueliner, set by Nicklas Lidstrom. His final game is against New Jersey tomorrow -- a team he has three points against in three contests so far this season. What's more, he could very well finish among the top ten of all scorers in the NHL, forwards included. He's currently sitting No. 10 overall, two behind Henrik Sedin and one up on the trio of Marian Hossa, Patrik Elias and Joe Thornton. If he can pull it off, he'll become the first rear guard to finish that high since Brian Leetch accomplished the feat in the 1991-92 campaign. Most Improved Goalie This Season

Yesterday I wrote that I think Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators is the most improved player this season.  Commenters quickly pointed out Brian Elliott of the St Louis Blues.  While Elliott has had a huge statistical improvement in his play this season, I do not see it as a huge sustained improvement.  I wouldn’t list him among the elite goalies in the NHL.  There are several...

Reasons Why Alfredsson Could Retire

from Ian Mendes of Sportsnet, Let me preface this blog entry by saying I really don’t want Daniel Alfredsson to retire. He’s an absolute pleasure to deal with on a daily basis and after watching him score 27 goals this season, it’s clear that he can still play this game at a high level. But we need to acknowledge that Thursday night could mark Daniel Alfredsson’s final regular...

Travis Yost: Ottawa Draws New York in Round One

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- For the past month, the Ottawa Senators fan base seemed resigned to a near-mathematical certainty.   ... And the 'experts' were wrong OTTAWA – Many of you have never seen my face before. It helps that I’ve never been featured prominently on the back of an OC Transpo Ottawa Sun sports section advertisement, so I may or may not be as stupid as I look. Nevertheless, I appear to be smarter than most, if not all of the hockey “experts.” I can’t find anyone...

Most Improved Player This Season

One award the NHL does not offer that I think should exist is a most improved player award.  If such a thing existed, I think the clear winner this year should be Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators.  He is the runaway top scoring defenceman in the NHL.  His defence is rapidly improving and this makes him a Norris Trophy candidate.  Some see him as the frontrunner, though I...
