Islanders goalie and Winthrop, MA native Rick DiPietro was once considered to be a future elite goaltender. That's why he was drafted first overall by New York back in 2000 and then given a record 15-year, $67.5 million contract in 2006.
Flash forward to 2011 and now DiPietro is just a really, really expensive backup third-string goalie for the lowly Islanders. The glass-boned netminder has suffered a barrage of injuries in his disappointing professional career.
He has missed more than 200 games in a little over a decade's worth of service in the NHL. Among his woes: hip surgery, various knee injuries & one surgery, groin & lower body injuries, a neck injury, a concussion suffered from an errant shot off the mask in practice. He has also missed more than a dozen games due to personal reasons, headaches, and the flu. Warrior!
Oh, and not to mention he missed a bunch of games after suffering facial lacerations because of this beauty Brent Johnson...
