News broke out late Saturday night and the rumor mill was buzzing as Fox Sports Detroit was told by an NHL source that the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators are in trade talks about returning Jordin Tootoo to Nashville. The former fan favorite has spent eight seasons with the Predators playing in 486 career games totaling 125 points (46g, 79a) and 725 penalty minutes. Of course this rumor left everyone up in arms wondering, "What the hell are you thinking David Poile?". The reason Preds fans are questioning what Poile is doing not because they don't like Tootoo, the move just doesn't make any sense. After extending Rich Clune's contract through the 2015-16 season and signing Matt Hendricks and Eric Nystrom to four-year contracts off of free agency, there isn't enough room in the lineup to add another tough guy. Unless, someone is being moved. The only logical thing about trading for Tootoo would be that there are multiple players involved, specifically forwards (David Legwand and Paul Gaustad).  Going back to the start of the offseason, GM Poile and head coach Barry Trotz stated they wanted to return to Predators' hockey, something they got away from when they finished second to dead last this past season in the Western Conference. Adding Tootoo would certainly help the Preds getting back to their style of play, but in doing so, they are also giving up scoring potential from others in the lineup. In 42 games last season, Tootoo had three goals, five assists and seventy-eight penalty minutes. That isn't going to help the scoring department at all. With the Red Wings no longer being divisional or conference rivals, Poile can now communicate with them more than usual. Tootoo has a $1.9 million cap hit next season and they are looking to dump him to another team who can handle his salary. Poile has something up his sleeve that will 'wow' the hockey world -- just wait. If he doesn't make something big happen, look for the Preds to be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs this season. (Photo by USA TODAY Sports)
