Jared Cowen scored 45 seconds into overtime, giving the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. Cowen pinched into the slot and redirected a pass from Erik Karlsson in the right corner. Milan Michalek and Peter Regin also scored for Ottawa, which came back after trailing 2-1 in the first period. Michalek, who leads the NHL with 19 goals, left the game with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the second period after colliding with Karlsson. Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots. Ryan Miller made a season-high 41 saves for the Sabres, who dropped to 2-5-3 in their last 10 home games. Paul Szczechura and Tyler Ennis scored for Buffalo. Buffalo had its six-game winning streak against Ottawa snapped. The Sabres are 8-1-1 in the last 10 games of the Northeast Division rivalry. Regin's goal tied the game 7 1/2 minutes into the third period, when his point shot got through a screen in front of Miller. Buffalo got off to yet another slow start as Michalek scored j...

Around The NHL: Downie Fined, Filatov Flees & More

Filatov To KHL, Again To no surprise former 6th overall pick Nikita Filatov is heading back to Russia for the second time in his short career. The Senators announced on Monday that they have loaned the young forward to CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Filatov was traded to Ottawa this past summer (for a 3rd round pick) from Columbus after showing no interest in playing in the AHL. According...

Sabres F Leino out with lower body injury

Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino is out indefinitely after sustaining what the team is calling a lower body injury. Coach Lindy Ruff says Leino will be out ''for weeks'' after the player was absent from practice on Wednesday, a day after being hurt in a 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa. It's the latest blow to an injury-riddled team that hasn't had a healthy...

McQuaid Knees Foligno

I would expect the NHL to review Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid's knee to knee check on  Ottawa Senator's forward Nick Foligno. When I first saw the hit, I thought that Nick Foligno would be done for the night but Foligno returned to game after shaking it off on the bench. McQuaid was given a five minute major and a game misconduct.

Leino Out For Several Weeks

from Mike Harrington of Sabres Edge, Ville Leino is out several weeks with a lower body injury suffered last night against Ottawa. Leino played 14:49 in the game but took only one shift in the final 9:25 of play, a 56-second run that ended with 1:01 left. So it’s pretty clear he had some sort of knee or foot problem he was dealing with. (Just guessing here but players often skate...

Ottawa Senators forward Milan Michalek is day-to-day after suffering a concussion during Tuesday's 3-2 overtime victory against the Buffalo Sabres.

Did last year screw up this year for the Sabres?

In the beginning part of February, Heather B. and I decided to do a Sabres podcast together. Alright, it was mostly me begging her to talk to me, but she finally gave in. Anyway, the day we did our first podcast came right after Tom Golisano announced he was selling the team. At the time, the Sabres were still on the outside looking into the playoffs and yes, they made some moves...

Adam McQuaid's Knee-to-Knee Hit Has Fans Guessing at Possibility of Suspension, Fine Coming

Adam McQuaid was given a kneeing major and a game misconduct after a nasty collision with Senators winger Nick Foligno. The question then became whether that's all the punishment that Quaider will be seeing from the league office. Brendan Shanahan has shown that he is unafraid to drop the hammer on transgressors this season and hit them with hefty fines and suspensions. But,...
