Kimmo Timonen twirled and dished the puck back, deeper into the Flyers‘ zone to try to shake a pressuring attacker. The puck landed on Ilya Bryzgalov‘s stick and by the time he could look up, David Clarkson was bearing down hot and heavy. With panic in his eyes, Bryzgalov tried to saucer the puck out of harm’s way. It was a Bryzaster. Ultimately, Clarkson’s series-clinching gift – after Bryzgalov’s pass deflected off his outstretched stick and into the net – will be the lasting image of the end of the Flyers’ spring dreams. But it certainly wasn’t the reason the Flyers, incapable of adjusting after three consecutive and eerily similar losses, the Devils dealt them the death blow with a 3-1 final score in Game 5. The Flyers will return to their practice facility on Thursday to gather their belongings and conduct exit meetings. They have all summer to realize what could have been.

Why you heff be mad? Is just bad goal allowed by Ilya Bryzgalov

This wasn't the greatest, most consistent season for Ilya Bryzgalov. The Russian netminder, playing in his first year with the Philadelphia Flyers, was a roller coaster ride unto himself during the regular season. He could go from dramatic highs of shut out streaks to miserable lows. The celebrity status given to him on HBO's NHL 24/7 and the Philadelphia press might'...

Blame it all on Bryzgalov?

Amidst discussion of Jaromir Jagr’s future and the Flyers’ baffling team-wide performances against the New Jersey Devils, much of the criticism regarding the Flyers’ individual shortcomings involves pointed and harsh criticism of Ilya Bryzgalov’s play (though the Devils are earning full marks for taking out Philly as well). Given so many suggestions over the last 12 or...

New Jersey Devils eliminate Philadelphia Flyers, advance to Eastern Conference Finals

In an utterly bizarre game, Ilya Bryzgalov gave up a terrible goal and yet kept a Philadelphia Flyers team that seemed to forget how to play defense and how to score goals in a game the New Jersey Devils almost easily won, first off-side goal included, by a 3-1 tally, capturing the series in 5 games. The Devils advance to face the winner of the Washington-New York series in the...

Take down the Wells Fargo Center ice: Devils beat Flyers, 3-1, to take series in five games

It was a stupid turnover that Ilya Bryzgalov made that Flyers fans will remember in the Flyers’ 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils that cost the Flyers a chance to move to the Eastern Conference Final. But it was not the reason the Flyers lost Game 5. They routinely made sloppy passes, Marty Brodeur handled the puck better than his counterpart and the Devils made better advantage...

Holmgren wants Bryzgalov to focus next season

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren calls his team's season ''decent.'' That's not good enough in Philadelphia. The Flyers cleaned out their lockers on Thursday and said their farewells for the summer. They were eliminated by New Jersey in a five-game series in the Eastern Conference semifinals that ended on Tuesday. Holmgren says he wants to see improvement...

Holmgren wants Bryzgalov to look forward

Ilya Bryzgalov had plenty of time this season to babble on about bears, the universe, the woods, and other arcane bits of knowledge. He kept quiet on Thursday. Staying out of the locker room on the day Philadelphia packed up and headed home might be the first sign the Flyers' quirky goalie learned a lesson that he's paid $51 million to win games and not play the room like...

Patient Devils eliminate Flyers, reach conference finals

PHILADELPHIA -- The New Jersey Devils refused to be bullied on Broad Street. They were patient, aggressive and disciplined. As a result, they're moving on in the playoffs. David Clarkson scored the go-ahead goal on a mistake by goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, Martin Brodeur made 27 saves and the Devils eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-1 victory in Game 5 of their Eastern...

Richard Cloutier: The Daigle Awards

Yep, that's right. Remember Alexandre Daigle, the 1st overall pick in 1993, taken by the Ottawa Senators, who was a total bust? Daigle might not be the worst top pick ever (ummm, Brian Lawton might be worse) but he's close. He's bad enough to have a Hockeybuzz awards show named after him. Why write this blog now? I was watching Ilya Bryzgalov a minute ago stink the...

Devils 3, Flyers 1

PHILADELPHIA -- David Clarkson scored the go-ahead goal on a mistake by goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, Martin Brodeur made 27 saves and the New Jersey Devils eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-1 victory in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night. Bryce Salvador and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for New Jersey, which heads to the conference finals for...

How Did Holmgren Do?

The team that made the biggest wholesale changes last summer was probably the Philadelphia Flyers.  They traded Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in order to make salary cap room to acquire Ilya Bryzgalov, who was supposed to solve their goaltending problems.  Initially, I didn’t think the moves were very smart.  Now that the season has ended for the Flyers, we can better assess...

Flyers Have Plenty to Be Proud Of and To Look Forward To

The fact that there were any hopes of a Stanley Cup in Philadelphia this year is a testament to what the Flyers were able to accomplish this season. Before the season began, I wrote about the fact that no one really knew what to expect from this Flyers team. There were a lot of variables and a lot of question marks. The 2011-12 Flyers needed to establish an identity. They needed...

Devils eliminate Flyers with Game 5 win

Bryce Salvador, David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk scored goals to lift New Jersey to a 3-1 Game 5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night, sending the Devils into the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2003. Martin Brodeur was strong in goal and has the Devils back in position to win their fourth Stanley Cup. The Devils await the winner of the New York...

Fantasy Hockey Playoff ONE (5/9)

There is still a bounce in the step for those fantasy poolies who own players from the New Jersey Devils as the Devils eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-1 victory last night.  New Jersey took the series in five games which was a prediction no one saw coming, given the way Philadelphia humbled Pittsburgh in Round 1.  David Clarkson had the game winner...

Devils-Flyers Recap

One day after the Devils eliminated Philadelphia from the playoffs in convincing fashion, winning the series 4-1, much is being made of Philadelphia's apparent lack of effort in the series and subsequent elimination. After a grueling and entertaining first round victory over in-state rival, and presumptive Stanley Cup favorite Pittsburgh, a series that featured little defense...
