(image via flickr) It should come as no surprise that there is a stretch of freeway named after Wayne Gretzky in Edmonton, Alberta. The Great One spent the first ten years of his unparalleled career as a member of the Edmonton Oilers, winning four Stanley Cups, before he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. Fittingly, Gretzky remained a worshiped icon after he left town. So much so that in 1999, the freeway Capilano Drive was renamed Wayne Gretzky Drive on Oct. 1, 1999. And the name has stayed that way ever since that day. San Jose Sharks play-by-play man Randy Hahn learned firsthand recently that there are stretches of Wayne Gretzky Drive equipped with cameras that catch unsuspecting motorists speeding. During a recent road trip to Alberta for a San Jose Sharks road trip, Hahn rented a car. Some time later, he was notified by the car rental company that he had been caught speeding on Wayne Gretzky Drive, driving in excess of the 80 km (approximately 55 mph) speed limit. And that’s when things got strangely — not to mention expensively — interesting. Via a “Randy’s Thoughts” post on the Sharks official website: I received a curious envelope in the mail the other day. You know the kind where you don’t recognize who or where it’s from but you know it’s important. It was from a rental car company in Edmonton where I rented a vehicle on the Sharks last road trip to the Alberta capital. It seems that I was caught speeding, by a traffic camera. As you can see, the notice doesn’t indicate how fast I was traveling. I don’t dispute that I was probably over the limit. As I recall “the great” Drew Remenda was in the car with me and we were almost certainly distracted breaking down the Sharks power play breakout. But when I took a closer look at the ticket, I was floored. And why was he floored? Because of the fine associated with the particular excessive rate of speed he was caught driving (via Sharks.com): What a odd coincidence. The fine Hahn was assessed for speeding on Wayne Gretzky Drive was 99 bucks, the same number Gretzky wore throughout his NHL career and a number so synonymous with Gretzky that the NHL retired the number league-wide in 2000, shortly after The Great One hung up his skates for good. Yep, fined 99 bucks for speeding on road named after No. 99. Moving violations, Twilight Zone-style!
