The San Jose Sharks placed goaltender Antero Niittymaki on waivers today in an attempt to bring relief to the backlog of netminders the team has.

Today is the first day of the all-star break for the Sharks, and Niittymaki was with his family on vacation at Lake Tahoe when he found out the news — from the Finnish media.

From MTV3 in Finland, via Google Translate:

“Huh, I am a waiver list? No one has told me, no one has called. Well, this is not surprising.”

Here’s more of Niittymaki’s reaction, courtesy of Matias Strozyk:

“I don’t want to be in this organization at all anymore, nothing wrong with city. Glad they did it, hope somebody picks me up.”

“I’m not the hottest name in market and my salary isn’t on my side either. 2M is big money for someone who hasn’t played much.”

“It’s not a surprise. There was some talk yesterday. I’m glad they did it and are trying to do something.”

Niittymaki, 31, hasn’t played for the Sharks this season after recovering from offseason hip surgery. He was cleared to resume play in late December and has been on two assignments with the team’s AHL minor-league affiliate in Worcester, Mass.

With Antti Niemi as San Jose’s main fixture in net, and Thomas Greiss playing well in support, there simply wasn’t any room for Niittymaki.

As Niemi’s back-up last season, Niittymaki went 12-7-3 with a 2.71 goals-against average. He made two impressive appearances in the playoffs after relieving a struggling Niemi, notching one win and allowing one goal.

If Niittymaki clears waivers, the Sharks could try to trade him or assign him overseas.
