SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Mike Smith made 33 saves through overtime and then turned aside two more shots in the shootout to carry the Phoenix Coyotes to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. The only offense in the entire game was provided by Phoenix's Mikkel Boedker and Radium Vrbata, who both netted shootout goals against Sharks goalie Antii Niemi. Smith, who recorded his fourth shutout of the season, made several acrobatic saves, including one in the shootout. Smith has 21 career NHL shutouts. Niemi was nearly as flawless, stopping 21 shots before the shootout to earn his first shutout of the season and 20th in the NHL. The Sharks entered the game with one power-play goal in their previous 21 opportunities, and went 0-for-4. Phoenix came with four goals in 23 chances before an 0-for-3 performance.

John Jaeckel: Hawks Storm Desert

Follow me @jaeckel Hockey is a funny sport. 10 months ago, Phoenix goalie Mike Smith and his flowing locks were the toast of the game. These days, Smith is a complete sieve—albeit still possessing his tonsorial splendor. The Blackhawk Blitzkrieg through the Western Conference continued last night in Glendale, AZ, with a 6-2 beatdown administered to the Coyotes, Phoenix’...

Coyotes-Avalanche Preview

After a spotty start to the season, Mike Smith has more recently resembled the dominant goaltender he was in 2011-12. The Phoenix Coyotes have benefited as a result, winning three of their last four. The Colorado Avalanche offense remains anemic, and it may continue to struggle - especially if Smith makes his sixth straight start for the Coyotes. Phoenix will try to win for the...

Coyotes plan to 'correct problems' in San Jose

GLENDALE, Ariz. The Sharks will have had four days to stew on back-to-back losses by the time the Coyotes take the ice Saturday for a matinee meeting at HP Pavilion. San Jose wasnt beaten in regulation in its first eight games before the Ducks and Blackhawks stalled what had been a torrid start with 2-1 and 5-3 wins in Anaheim and San Jose, respectively. Will that mean a more...

Cam Gore: Coyotes outlast the Sharks in a double shutout

The Coyotes just waited around for a point and ended coming away with two as these teams played to a 0-0 tie and a shootout win for Phoenix. Mikkel Boedker scored the shootout winner to even the season series at one each after the Sharks were unable to light the lamp for the first time this year. It was a game that the Sharks played well in and created more scoring opportunities than the...

Coyotes-Sharks Preview

Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton were among the league leaders in points not too long ago, but their production has dried up as have the wins for the San Jose Sharks. That duo was at its best earlier this season against the Phoenix Coyotes, who are winless on the road as they try to hand the Sharks a fourth straight loss Saturday. San Jose (7-2-1) won its first seven games for...

Shrink The Goalie’s Gear?

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, The debate around the dimensions of goalie pads has been around for years, if not decades. And San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson isn’t about to allow the contentious issue to fade into the background, because he and others believe the padding has become less about protection and more about stopping pucks from going through a netminder’s...
