The Phoenix Coyotes rode goaltender Mike Smith to the first division title in franchise history last season, but his struggles are a major reason why the Pacific Division champions are winless in 2012-13. A strong performance from their goalie has the Columbus Blue Jackets off to a surprisingly good start. Phoenix looks to avoid its worst start since relocating to the desert Wednesday night when it hosts the Blue Jackets, who are trying to go their first three games without a regulation loss for the first time in six seasons. Smith has struggled to follow up his career season of 2011-12, when he posted personal bests of 38 wins and a 2.21 goals-against average. He allowed 10 goals on 57 shots in the Coyotes' first two games. The most goals he gave up in back-to-back starts in 2011-12 was eight, but he allowed all the goals in a 6-4 loss to Chicago on Sunday. "We had unacceptable goaltending in both games and there's no excuse for it," Smith told the Coyotes...

It hasn’t been the best start to the 2013 NHL season for Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. The Phoenix Coyotes Selected Blake Wheeler Fifth Overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft

Blake Wheeler, who spent his first his first two-plus seasons with the Bruins, showed Boston hockey fans that he’s got all the tools to become an elite winger in the NHL. PHOENIX -- Veteran newcomer Steve Sullivan scored a hat trick in his third game with Phoenix and goaltender Jason LaBarbera gave up only one goal in relief of injured Mike Smith to help the Coyotes to their first victory of the season, 5-1, over Columbus at Jobing.com Arena on Wednesday. In early hole, Coyotes must work their way out

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Coyotes watched Sunday night from center ice as their 2011-12 Pacific Division championship banner appeared from behind a black cover. It hung crooked, somehow appropriate for a franchise that last year put together the best season in franchise history amid a seemingly endless ownership saga and rumors of relocation. As nice a moment as it was for the Coyotes...

When Steve Sullivan joined the Phoenix Coyotes, he knew it was a team where players had specific roles and that his would be to create scoring chances. Three goals in his third game is a good start. Sullivan had his eighth career hat trick, Oliver Ekman-Larsson had two goals and an assist and the Coyotes beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-1, Wednesday night for their first win of...

The 3 Best Moments From The NHL’s Return Weekend

Hockey is back! Euphoria is the only emotion I’ve felt the past few days since the return of the NHL last Saturday. As a Blackhawks fan, I have even more to be happy about. The ‘Hawks are off to a hot start, spoiling the Los Angeles Kings’ banner raising ceremony with a 5-2 victory and then enacting revenge on the Coyotes the next day with a 6-4 win. The betrayal that is...
