The Free Press's Helene St. James (via RedWingsFeed) reports that the Red Wings received a modicum of good news regarding Darren Helm's back issues after Helm visited a back specialist yesterday. According to St. James, while the Wings still don't know when Helm will return, they've at least figured out why he's been suffering from a sore back for the past two weeks:
"They ruled out everything bad," general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press. "It's a small strain or tear in a lower back ligament. He got an injection, said he felt better right away."
Helm is now under orders to rest until Monday, at which point the Wings anticipate being able to start treatment and get Helm on a path to a return to the lineup.

Earlier in this young NHL season, pictures of the facemask of then-backup Red Wings goalie Thomas McCollum made their internet debut. McCollum has a liking of the late Chris Farley’s character Tommy Boy. Apparently the sense of humor is a trend among Wings backup netminders as the current Jimmy Howard backup, Petr Mrazek, has a different funny guy on his mask. The 20-year old...

To say things haven’t gone as planned for the Detroit Red Wings to start the shortened hockey season is putting it mildly. Plenty of familiar issues, be them with scoring, the power play or the penalty kill have all reared their ugly heads at inoppertune times.
But, have there also been some bigger issues in between the pipes to complicate these matters?
Rookie Petr Mrazek, one of the gems of Detroit’s minor-league system, will make his first NHL start on Thursday night, as the Red Wings head into St. Louis to take on the Blues.
Multiple reports confirmed the news Thursday afternoon, following rumors of the possible switch in net. The Red Wings just called Mrazek up from Grand Rapids following Detroit’s loss to Calgary on Tuesday...
from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
Ask Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock how he can fix what ails his bottom two forward units and he’ll utter a one-word answer.
“Helm,” is Babcock’s response.
Unfortunately, that situation doesn’t look like it’s about to change anytime soon. The Wings will go into St. Louis Thursday to face the Blues once again minus energy...

The Detroit Red Wings knew that they'd be facing a fired-up Flames team that had lost a 3-2 shootout decision after surrendering the game-tying goal in the final seconds thereof on Saturday, and knew that they'd have to push much harder and play much better than they did in the team's awful 4-2 loss to Columbus...
And instead, the Wings kinda rolled over and died, but...
I may be one of five people who had no problem with Red Wings forward Johan Franzen spearing David Perron after Perron smashed Franzen's face into the boards (since Franzen suffered a subdural hematoma after being concussed against the Colorado Avalanche in 2008, and you may remember how Gary Roberts welcomed Franzen back by punching him in the face repeatedly), especially as...

The Red Wings earned all of the zero points they got last night. Calgary came ready to play and Detroit did not. Really, this game was just a replay of the Columbus game from Saturday night. Nothing positive will be said in this post, so if you’re not into that sort of thing, might want to skip this one.
Some brutal honesty after the jump:
Jimmy Howard is not our problem...
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in his NHL debut, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do. I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection. Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the...
Red Wings interim back-up goalie and top prospect Petr Mrazek's received as much attention for the image of Family Guy's Peter Griffin on his goalie mask, which is a creation of something of a legend in the mask-painting industry in David Gunnarson, but MLive's Ansar Khan and the Detroit News's Ted Kulfan found out that just because Petr Mrazek may indeed be a "...
My 3 stars of the game
1. Cory Emmerton, DET. 1 goal, 1 assist.
2. Damian Brunner, DET. 1 goal, had a couple other decent chances.
3. Drew Miller, DET. 2 assists.
Honorable mention: Petr Mrazek (28 saves on 29 shots; maybe deserving of a star but I didnât see a lot of âtoughâ saves out of him).
In all honesty, no one really stood out in a positive way...
All of a sudden that 6-0 opening season loss to the Blues seems like a long time ago.
Thursday night the Wings defeated St. Louis 5-1 behind an impressive performance by rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek and the third and fourth lines.
Mrazak who made his first career NHL start for a resting Jimmy Howard turned away 26 shots in the win while looking extremely confident between the pipes...
