PLAYERS: Derek Stepan
TEAMS: New York Rangers
Been told Derek Stepan is accompanying the Rangers on the team flight to Montreal. No word yet on J.T. Miller. — Andrew Gross (@AGrossRecord) May 26, 2014 The fact Stepan is traveling with the team leaves open the possibility for him to return in game five on Tuesday night. Depending on how much longer this series lasts, I do think it is probable that he will play. His broken jaw couldn’t have been too severe considering the circumstances. And if there isn’t a high level of risk for long term complications, it’s just a matter of pain management and adjusting to the full cage or bubble shield. My suspicion is that Stepan will skate with the team tomorrow and Tuesday, but will not play. That remains to be seen and is obviously totally speculative.

Stepan skates with full facial protection, is tougher than you

Derek Stepan took part in the morning skate at the Bell Centre and played with his usual line alongside Rick Nash and Chris Kreider. Nice job done by the Rangers equipment managers not making Stepan look like Bane. Though that extra strip of yellow padding makes it pretty obvious that he is really pushing himself to play. This is for certain, Stepan is tougher than you and I. He...

Stepan’s status remains uncertain heading into game five

Alain Vigneault said in French during the press conference yesterday that Derek Stepan traveled with the team because ‘you can’t treat a broken jaw and he preferred to be with his teammates’. The gist of this quote is a little different than what he had to say in English, when he seemed to leave open the possibility that Stepan could play in game five. Game five may...

Stepan With Team in Montreal, Doubtful for Game 5; Miller Still in New York With Shoulder Injury; Fast, Lindberg On Trip

Derek Stepan (broken jaw) accompanied his Rangers teammates to Montreal for tomorrow’s Game 5, however, Alain Vigneault said his center iceman is doubtful. In other injury news, JT Miller stayed in New York because of the shoulder injury sustained in Game 4. Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg made the trip and are candidates for the vacant forward position. Dan Carcillo is also on...

Derek Stepan, expected to return to lineup, must be cleared by 3 doctors

Derek Stepan looked very much like he was ready to return to the Rangers' lineup when he took part in the team's Tuesday morning skate in the Bell Centre. But Stepan, who centered a line with Rick Nash and Chris Kreider, needed to be cleared by the three doctors traveling with the Rangers. "There's a lot of things that have to happen for him to play tonight,"...

Brandon Prust Apologizes For Hit On Derek Stepan, Injury ‘Unfortunate’

Montreal Canadiens winger Brandon Prust is attempting to make amends for his late hit on New York Rangers center Derek Stepan. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Prust said that he had reached out to Stepan and apologized for a late hit that left the Rangers center with a broken jaw in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. “It’s an unfortunate injury,” Prust said, via...

Stepan out, Miller in tonight

Alain Vigneault announced yesterday that J.T. Miller would be returning to the lineup, probably in light of the Dan Carcillo suspension. Some doubt may have been cast when Derick Brassard announced he would be returning tonight, but now with the confirmed news that Derek Stepan will be out with his broken jaw (not surprising, despite […]

The Mindset Of A Hockey Player

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY, Rangers center Derek Stepan was sitting in a hospital Saturday recovering from surgery on a broken jaw, and the media's concern about him was limited to queries about when he would play again. This is all Bobby Baun's fault. In 1964, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman scored a game-winning goal on a broken ankle in Game 6 of the...

Eastern Conference Finals Game 5: Finish them

For the first time in 20 years, the Rangers are one win away from the Stanley Cup Finals. They found a way to win a Game Four that they didn’t deserve to win, and now hold a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Canadiens. Derek Stepan is a maybe. If he can’t go, one of […]

Therrien fumes about Rangers watching a Habs practice

Shortly after the start of the Canadiens’ practice this afternoon at Madison Square Garden, an upset Canadiens coach Michel Therrien asked/demanded that Rangers assistant Ulf Samuelsson not watch his team practice. After that, Rangers GM Glen Sather came out to watch the Canadiens practice and assistant Dan Lacroix did too, with Canadiens goaltender coach Stephane Waite informing...

Brandon Prust: Injury 'unfortunate'

Montreal Canadiens winger Brandon Prust reached out to injured Rangers center Derek Stepan, saying Saturday he feels bad that his friend suffered a broken jaw. Prust was suspended two games for the hit which saw Stepan require surgery Friday night. "It's an unfortunate injury," Prust, a former Ranger, told the assembled media Saturday. "Unfortunate for him, and...

Rangers Need to Block Out All the Canadien Noise

Being a Mets fan, I have to deal with the arrogance and sense of entitlement from Yankees fans on a daily basis. The history, the championships and the payroll. But that is nothing compared to what I’ve dealt with the last week from Canadiens fans. The whining combined with the surprising lack of knowledge of the game sprinkled in with an unapologetic and grossly distorted bias...
