The Rangers have announced that it's time to cast your vote for the 2011-12 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award.

From now through March 29th, you can cast your vote for the Rangers player that you feel "goes above and beyond the call of duty" at newyorkrangers.com.

Following the 1987-88 season, the Rangers established the award dedicated to paralyzed New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot in the line of duty.

Brandon Prust won the award last season. For a list of past winners click here.

...to me this is the toughest choice in years. In recent seasons, Callahan and Prust seemed like obvious choices, but this year you could easily add Girardi, McDonagh, Boyle and Lundqvist to the mix.

...in the end I decided to go with Girardi. Despite his recent struggles there is no one on the team that "goes beyond the call of duty" more than him.

H/T to reader Elyssa for the reminder.
