from Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Both Lee Stempniak (in on a one-year free agent deal for $900,000) and Matt Lombardi (in at $800,000 per for two years) will fall under the AHL threshold, so neither would count against the cap for so much of a nickel if either fails to make the Rangers out of camp. But these additions of marginal NHL players doesn’t say a lot for the organization’s confidence in the readiness of kids in the organization such as J.T. Miller, Danny Kristo, Oscar Lindberg, Ryan Haggerty and maybe even Jesper Fast to nail down spots with the varsity, much less be difference-makers. Seriously. Would Stempniak — who scored for the Penguins in Game 1 against the Rangers, then went pointless in the next six matches of the second round while bouncing all over the lineup — or Lombardi — who was in Switzerland last year and hasn’t had a productive NHL season since 2009-10 — have made a difference against L.A.? And how three years at $1.45 million per fo...

Projecting Derick Brassard’s next contract

Derick Brassard is the third and final RFA that filed for arbitration this month (Mats Zuccarello and Chris Kreider). I’ve looked at both Kreider’s and Zuccarello’s next contracts already, and with arbitration dates coming up, it’s time to look at Brassard’s potential deal. Brassard is an interesting case, if only because of his high salary […] The post Projecting Derick...

Rangers Sign Steady Stempniak

The New York Rangers surprised many by qualifying for the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals and did so based in large part on the strength of their club’s depth. Salary cap constraints have conspired to rob the team of some of that depth with Benoit Pouliot, Brad Richards, Anton Stralman and Brian Boyle all departing as […]

The Stempniak and Lombardi Signings Bring Needed Depth

As of a week ago, the New York Rangers still had plenty of offensive spots open from losses this summer that were not filled. Many expected the younger players in the farm system to get a good look during camp with the opportunity to make the team to start the season. That still may be the case. However, bringing in Matthew Lombardi and Lee Stempniak not only provides players to...

Dreger: Rangers closing in on Lee Stempniak

Per Darren Dreger, the Rangers are closing in on a deal with free agent winger Lee Stempniak on a one-year deal. The Rangers struck gold with Benoit Pouliot last season, and are looking to do so again with this signing. Stempniak and Pouliot had similar offensive output and #fancystats are comparable, so this seems like a […] The post Dreger: Rangers closing in on Lee Stempniak...

Way Too Early to Worry About Next Season

In the eyes of much of the mainstream NHL media, the New York Rangers have not had a good summer. They bemoan the losses of Brad Richards, Benoit Pouliot, Anton Stralman and Brian Boyle while suggesting the club didn’t adequately replace those losses in free agency. Many pundits also point out that some of the […]

Another year, another anticipated contract battle as Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Marc Staal’s contract extension negotiations with the Rangers could start at six-year, $5.5 million per year as he could easily obtain that number on the open market next summer. In 460 career games, Staal has 27g, 84a. Last season he had 3g, 11a in the regular season and 1g, 4a...

Photo: Cam Talbot’s mask is a tribute to the Ghostbusters

New York Rangers goalie Cam Talbot may be the back up to Henrik Lundqvist. Talbot gained some recognition this past season when he stepped up as a excellent back up. But fans have another reason to like him, he’s a huge fan of the ’80′s classic, “Ghostbusters.” According to nbcsports.com, Mask artist Dave Gunnarsson (“Dave Art”) presents the latest (yes, it’s...

Rangers' Cam Talbot has a new 'Ghostbusters' mask and it kicks all kinds of butt

Serving as Henrik Lundqvist's backup can be bring it's fair share of hardships for any NHL goalie. The room for error playing in spot duty is extremely slim, and fans can be quick to wish they hadn't picked the one unfortunate night of coming to the arena and seeing the backup netminder in place of King Henrik. But for the Rangers' Cam Talbot, fans at MSG and arenas...

Lindberg Hoping Offseason Work Pays Off

This offseason, I’ve been posting a lot about reclamation projects the Rangers might be interested in offering a one-year, low cost contract in an effort remain competitive while staying under the cap. Acquiring a David Booth, Devin Setoguchi or Dustin Penner on a cap friendly deal seemingly bares no risk, but it’s always a gamble when trying to turn a lemon into the lemonade...

Dreger: Lee Stempniak likely to sign with Rangers

By mid-July standards, this Tweet from TSN's Darren Dreger counts as breaking news: Lee Stempniak is closing in on a 1 yr agreement with the NY Rangers. — Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) July 19, 2014 Having lost Brian Boyle to Tampa Bay, Stempniak's a solid-enough replacement.
