LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 09: David Backes #42 of the St. Louis Blues looks on during a break in their NHL game against the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center on January 9, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. The Blues defeated the Kings 4-3. (Photo by Victor Decolongon/Getty Images)
So lets get one thing straight before we hit the jump... I never, ever, ever wish harm on a hockey player from another team. Unless the other player is Claude Lemieux. Screw that guy. That said, tonight David Backes of the St. Louis Blues needs to pay the piper a bit. Hit the jump to find out why. I know what the assumption will be from Blues fans—and from Red Wings fans as well. That I want Backes to pay for his non-headshot on Brendan Smith ImeanKentHuskins. That couldn't be father from the truth. Let me be the first to say that the hit on Huskins wasn't a headshot. However it is a great example of why I do think it's time for Mr. Backes to have a little taste of his own medicine. This guy has been running around against the Wings like a freight train with no tracks since the season opener. I know I'm not the only one that remembers him flattening Damien Brunner in that game. And then, during the same shift crunching Henrik Zetterberg (fast-forward to the 24 second mark on that one). No Wing stood up to him then, and no Wing has stood up to him since. It's not a matter of those hits being dirty, because they weren't. Well, the one on Brunner was a little from behind, but I'm not new school enough to call it dirty.  This is a matter of a player on the other team taking liberties with Detroit's best hockey players. I'm not calling for Backes to get his head caved in or anything along those lines. All I want is a nice "how do ya' do" from Kronwall or Tootoo to remind Backes that he isn't the only guy that can throw his weight around. Lets get real. Darren McCarty would have never put up with that s@#&. If I am Mike Babcock I line Tootoo up in my top-six all night and go for the matchup against Backes. I'm not Babcock (obviously), but I feel like there needs to be a physical prescience on the ice against the captain of the Blues at all times at this point. Detroit plays St. Louis too often to have one of their top guys feeling like they can run whoever they want, whenever they want, with no repercussions. Again, I'm not looking for anyone to run the guy. Just a little heads up that Detroit has guys that can play like that too. I can't tell you how rock-'em-sock-'em stoked I'll be if it's Kronwall that catches him with his head down though... have we seen anyone get Kronwalled this season? I strain to remember, but I think not... Enjoy the game, and hit me up on Twitter (@FranklinSteele) to chat throughout if you'd like. I'm always down for some hockey chitter-chatter. Spares my girlfriend the aggravation of trying to figure out what in Hockey God's name I am talking about anyway. That poor girl. Go Wings. Over and out.
