DETROIT -- You might not be able to tell by the expression on his face when he's on the bench, but Red Wings coach Mike Babcock is actually enjoying himself immensely.
Babcock has coached better teams. The 2008 Stanley Cup champions and the Canadian Olympic team that won gold in 2010 come to mind first.
Still, there's something about his 2013 Red Wings team.

DETROIT, Michigan ---
Gone are the days of dynasties. Gone are the days of luring high profile free agents to join your club or team. This, is the new NHL.
The Detroit Red Wings have gone through more change this season than this generation of Wings fans has ever seen. With the retirement of defenseman Nick Lidstrom last summer, the final piece from the dynasty...
Jimmy Devellano is considered to be the architect of modern-day Detroit Red Wings hockey.
Over the span of 31 years, Devellano, now the Red Wings senior vice president, has created a culture of winning and excellence that's unrivaled in the city's professional sports history.
Never one to shy away from giving his opinion, Devellano acknowledges that Chicago built its team...
It is commonly said that regular season success doesn't always translate to success in the postseason in the NHL. The Detroit Red Wings proved that with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. It was the first time that the Blackhawks had lost to the Red Wings in regulation since April 10, 2011. Since then, the Blackhawks...
Team Sweden captured the World Championship today, defeating Switzerland 5-2, and while Niklas Kronwall's definitely proud of his brother Staffan (who captained the team) having won the first Swedish gold on home ice since 2006, and Damien Brunner's probably paying some lost bets this evening...
One Wings prospect did take part in the Worlds, and he shared a gold-filled...
Of Red Wings prospect-related note this evening:
The Grand Rapids Griffins will have to head back to Toronto for the last third of their 2-3-2-format series with the Toronto Marlies after dropping a 4-1 decision to Toronto on Saturday night. The Griffins lead the second round series 3 games to 2, and Games 6 and 7 take place and may take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Griffins...
Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith and forward Michal Handzus missed practice Friday, though coach Joel Quenneville said both players are fine and will play in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series against Detroit on Saturday.
Handzus also missed two practices before Wednesday night's series opener, but the 6-foot-4 center managed to play 17 minutes in the 4-1 victory over...
The Detroit Red Wings have gotten much younger than they used to be.
And now, as the Chicago Blackhawks are finding out, Detroit is a much better team than it was during the lockout-delayed regular season thanks to its improved cast of inexperienced players.
Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith netted game-winning goal in Saturday's series-evening, 4-1 win at Chicago.
Who are these guys? After getting skated into the ground and taken to the woodshed in game 1, DET pawned CHI in game 2. The Wings were so damn good, the 'Hawks Captain, having no excuses for his teams ineptitude, accused them of cheating: “I’m not going to go off and complain about some calls that I thought should have been called or whatever,” Toews said, before...
CHICAGO (AP) -- Damien Brunner and Brendan Smith scored in the second period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Saturday in Game 2 to even their Western Conference semifinal series.
It was a strong response by the Red Wings after Chicago handled them easily in the series opener, 4-1.
Just as the Blackhawks did in Game 1, Detroit took control in the second...
The Detroit Red Wings got much younger this year, rebuilding with rookies and prospects pushed onto the ice.
For much of the lockout-delayed season, it didn't look good for them.
The storied franchise used to chase Stanley Cup titles with key players in their late 30s and 40s such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Larry Murphy.
I spotted this clip of Red Wings prospect Tomas Jurco attempting to use a "Frankenstick," as inspired by Grand Rapids Griffins equipment manager Brad Thompson, in my subscription feed, and Puck Daddy found it while I was out doing a pop run, too. The Griffins players' reactions to the stick are amusing, and then Jurco gets his hands on the stick...With predictable results:

The Detroit Red Wings reverted back to their third-period woes in Game 1 against Chicago.
They got outscored 3-0 and outshot 19-9, which turned a tight game into a 4-1 loss.
The Wings had the same problems early in the Anaheim series during the last round. Detroit was outscored 8-1 in the third period of the first three games against the Ducks....

The Detroit Red Wings emphatically announced to the hockey world yesterday afternoon their intention of making this a very intriguing Western Conference semi-final with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center.
Now that the series has become a best-of-five and both teams have exhibited...
The Wings looked tired and asleep for much of game one. They didn't have that fire in them and Chicago didn't do anything to light it. Until now.
Want some lockerroom board worthy material to fire them up? Here you go, from the Chicago Tribune:
Red Wings don't belong in the same rink as the Hawks
And that's the headline...it gets...
