In yet another piece on Rick Nash, Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy discusses how the Columbus captain still has a Junior Hockey mentality meaning he tries to do too much on his own and thinks his size and power can overcome multiple player coverage from the defense.

Wyshyski adds this quote from former Ranger and TSN analyst Ray Ferraro on the impact John Tortorella would have on Nash...

"He's not playing junior hockey any longer if he ends up in New York (John Tortorella) and Detroit (Mike Babcock), I'll promise you that. Those coaches will get it out of him in a hurry."

...no offense to the Blue Jackets, but they're a fledgling organization, who have allowed Rick Nash to do what he wants in an effort to keep him happy and in a Columbus uniform. Which to me has actually stunted his growth as a player. His success in the league is a testament to his talent. But I think if you stick him on a real contender with a no nonsense coach (I know Hitchcock is a great coach, but doubt he ever disciplined his superstar winger) who would actually teach him how to the play the game "the right way", his skills will be taken to another level.

...still wouldn't give up the farm for him, but I think if Stepan is the main cog standing in the Rangers way of getting this done, it's a mistake by Sather not to make the move. Although, I'm hoping his patience will pay off with Howson eventually dropping his demands.

Wyshyski also noted that playing with Brad Richards makes the Rangers a big draw for Nash.

...nothing like playing with one of the top centers in the league to peak your interest.

Speaking of Nash, Dan Rosen at NHL.com handicaps the six possible new homes for Nash saying the Rangers need for the Columbus winger is obvious with the Marian Gaborik injury to an offense that already needed some scoring.

Rosen adds that players who could possibly be traded for Nash include Brandon Dubinsky, Michael Del Zotto, Carl Hagelin, Tim Erixon, Christian Thomas and JT Miller.

...to be honest, I'd have no problem losing any combination of those players to get Nash.

In other free agency news the Rangers have made yet another minor acquisition as they have signed Brandon Segal, who had zero points in ten games for the Lightening last season.

The 28-year old Segal (turns 29 tomorrow) has 11g, 11a in 102 NHL games over a five year career with the Lightning, Kings and Stars.

...wonder if Nash, Ryan and Weber are scrambling to contact their agents begging to get themselves traded to the Rangers just for a chance to play with Segal.

Finally, Jo Innes at Backhand Shelf gives us a personal account of what Dylan McIlrath's dislocated knee must have felt like as well as a possible timetable for his return...

"There’s a distinct possibility that McIlrath’s x-ray showed something that wasn’t going to fix itself, like a bone fragment in the joint. If that were the case, it would be an arthroscopic fix (tiny cameras stuffed into the knee through tiny incisions), with about a four to six week recovery. The fact that the Rangers aren’t floating a timeline for his return is either the Rangers being the Rangers, or a hint that he had more than just a simple arthroscopic joint cleanout – something like a tendon or ligament repair, or a fractured patella."

Innes adds that best case is McIlrath is good in a month and a half, with worst case scenario is he’s not ready to start the season.

...man, some of the pics in this piece are tough to look at.

...tough break (no pun intended) for McIlrath, who I really thought would push for a roster spot in camp. Looking at next year the earliest for his Rangers debut now.
