In his weekly chat over at ESPN.com, Scott Burnside says that if the Rangers could have their way they'd like to aquire an impact center before the trade deadline.

...ummmmm, didn't the Rangers get their impact centerman this past offseason? Now I'm being told they need another one before the first year of Richards' contract is over?

...also if the Rangers do bring in an elite centerman, which current top six center gets dropped to the third line? Stepan who has lots of chemistry with Gaborik or the high priced free agent Richards?

...and the last time I checked, impact centers were pretty expensive. Assuming none of us want the Rangers to trade Kreider, Miller or McIlrath.

...would much rather a scoring winger.

Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Oiler Ryan Smyth, who was drafted by Glen Sather in Edmonton, would give serious consideration to waiving his no-move clause in order to pursue a Cup on Broadway.

Smyth, who turns 36 on February 21st and is in the final year of his contract that pays him $6.25 million this year, has 16g, 18a on the season.

...so let me get this straight, the guy who begged his way back to Edmonton this offseason, is now, just months later, willing to except a trade back to a market he was so upset about coming to in 2007 that it actually made him cry? I assumed when Smyth couldn't sign fast enough with Colorado that summer we were all smart enough to realize he wasn't an east coast guy.

...and how is his $6.25 million supposed to fit under the cap? Dumping Wolski and EC isn't enough. Unless Sather is willing to send back the 25-year-old Dubinsky for the over-aged rental. And even doing that wouldn't leave enough space for an impact center and power play quarterback defenseman.

...on the positive end the guy has proved he can still score & he'd be off the books at the end of the season. I'd still say pass.
