OTTAWA, ON - JUNE 20: 27th overall pick, John Carlson of the Washington Capitals poses with team personnel after being selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place on June 20, 2008 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson scored a fluke goal during the second period of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, thanks to an assist from the Verizon Center glass. The Capitals were preparing for a line change, so Carlson shot the puck into the Penguins end along the glass, and Penguins goalie Tomas Vokoun went behind the net to play the puck. However, Vokoun learned the hard way that the Verizon Center glass was not seamless, as he was caught out of position as the puck was kicked out from the bottom of one of the glass panes and headed straight into the net, leading to a freebie goal for Carlson that tied the game at 2-2. Interestingly enough, Vokoun briefly played for the Capitals last season, so these quirks in the Verizon Center rink should not have come as a complete surprise. Fortunately, Vokoun's teammates responded with three second period goals on the way to a 6-3 Penguins victory. Video via NHL.com. H/T PD.
