The Buffalo Sabres started off the weekend on a huge note. They won in extremely convincing fashion by pummeling the Atlanta Thrashers 8-2 on home ice Saturday night. HSBC Arena had plenty to cheer about – and often. Jason Pominville scored just 37 seconds into the first period after a great clearance in front of the net by Tim Connolly. After the Thrashers tied the game at 1, Buffalo retaliated with a goals from unlikely Sabres – Mark Mancari‘s first goal as a Sabre on the power play, and Rob Niedermayer with a nifty backhand. The second period began with Atlanta bringing the game within one goal, but after the Sabres’  Tyler Ennis scored on a great breakaway slapshot to make it 4-2, Buffalo wouldn’t look back. 5 straight goals cemented an 8-2 embarrassment of the Thrashers, including power play goals from Brad Boyes and Tim Connolly.
