Photo by: clker.com Welcome to the Weekend Update. This is the weekly article that keeps you up-to-date on the NHL standings, provides you with videos from around the world of hockey from the week that was, and informs Nashvillians on the NHL games on television in the upcoming week. In this edition, Alex Semin makes an incredible pass, Vinny Prospal uses a spin-o-rama to defeat the Red Wings, Ovechkin earns a hat trick, the Canes are extremely unlucky and an extremely odd celebration in Russia. First things first. Here is your update on the NHL standings. When will Chicago lose in regulation? Maybe never. Also, Columbus is still really bad at hockey. Nothing to see here. Let's get to the videos... Our first video comes from Raleigh, North Carolina where the Carolina Hurricanes were playing host to the Winnipeg Jets Thursday night. The Canes have struggled so far this season after adding Jordan Staal and Alex Semin in the offseason, but with the Southeast Division being the weakest in the league, they are only two points out of third place in the Eastern Conference as of Sunday afternoon. With plays like this one, offense shouldn't be too much of a problem. Former Capital Alex Semin's highlight reel pass to Jiri Tlusty resulted in an equalizing goal in the first period. It would not be enough, however, as Winnipeg left Raleigh with a 4-3 win.   Speaking of great plays by bad teams, the Columbus Blue Jackets visited the Detroit Red Wings Thursday evening and snuck out with a 4-3 regulation win. How did they do it? Well this goal with 24.7 seconds remaining in the 3rd period sure helped. The "tic-tac-toe" play in transition was started by Derek Dorsett. He found James Wisniewski who found Vinny Prospal. Prospal did the rest with a nifty spin-o-rama past Howard.   We have another "tic-tac-toe" play and this one comes from the nation's capital. The Capitals were hosting the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon, and Washington's offense was clicking on all cylinders. The Caps are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference as of Sunday afternoon, almost unheard of in the last few seasons. But the Caps showed signs of their former selves Saturday with high-powered offense featuring who else but Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin completes is hat trick in this video, his first since Jan. 22, 2011. Is Ovi back? I hope so. When superstars succeed, it's good for the league. Also note in the video at the 39 second mark, a guy is faced with the tough decision of whether to throw his at on the ice or not. This is a tough spot, and as a Predators fan, I'm glad that it is unlikely I will be faced with this decision often.   We touched on the Carolina Hurricanes' struggles earlier. Sure they're not playing great, but it sure doesn't help when things like this happen to you. Monday in Montreal, the Hurricanes visited the Canadiens. Cam Ward had just given up a goal in the 3rd period to extend the Habs lead to two, and then this sealed it. Max Pacioretty skated past the red line and dumped the puck into the zone on net. The bouncing puck found its way past Cam Ward. Predators fans feel for you, Carolina. Our final video was spotted by the staff over at the Puck Daddy blog on Yahoo! Sports. It comes from the Russian Major League during a postgame celebration. Well, I guess you could call this a celebration. Despite winning the game, some of the players from the home team made inexcusable mistakes and had to be (pretend) exectuted. Only Russia...    Here's a schedule of NHL games on TV this week in Nashville for your viewing pleasure.
