Defenseman Jason Garrison reportedly will sign a six-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

The new contract is worth $4.6 million per year, TSN.com reported Sunday.

Garrison, 27, had a career year in 2011-12 with 16 goals and 17 assists in 77 games with the Florida Panthers. The offensive-minded defenseman added a goal and two assists for the Panthers in the playoffs at the end of his second full NHL campaign.

We know he can move the puck well out of the defensive zone, he has size and speed on his side and he kills penalties. Nice big shot from the point as well.

This is win-win for the Canucks as far as I’m concerned.

The 6’2”, 220-pound undrafted defenceman was signed by the Panthers in 2008 after three seasons with the University of Minnesota Duluth of the WCHA.

Garrison left $ on table – was offered “Wideman money” elsewhere – but wanted to play for hometown VAN, which held firm on internal $ scale.

“We’re very excited, we think there’s tremendous upside there, he wanted to come back to Vancouver, so we’re really pleased. He’s got great size, he skates well, and he makes a great first pass.”

“He fits into the way we play. He’ll get opportunities now that Sami Salo isn’t here. We went thru this type of experience with Dan Hamhuis, at the end of the day they (Garrison and Hamhuis) left more money on the table with other teams to be able to play at home.”

Per a Canucks.com press release the team announced the White Rock, British Columbia native has played 190 career NHL games with the Florida scoring 23 goals, 36 assists (23-36-59) and logging 81 penalty minutes.

This was a crucial pick-up for the Canucks who earlier in the day had lost Salo, who signed a two-year deal for $3.75 million per with the Lightning, and Aaron Rome, who signed a three-year deal worth $1.5 million per with the Dallas Stars.

Where does the Canucks defense stand now with the roster gain/loss? Their top six shakes down like this. Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis, Alex Edler, Jason Garrison, Keith Ballard and Chris Tanev.

In my opinion the top farm hands in Chicago include Yann Sauve, Frank Corrado, and Kevin Connauton.
