2012 NHL Free Agency Defenseman Jason Garrison reportedly will sign a six-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks. The new contract is worth $4.6 million per year, TSN.com reported Sunday. Garrison, 27, had a career year in 2011-12 with 16 goals and 17 assists in 77 games with the Florida Panthers. The offensive-minded defenseman added a goal and two assists for the Panthers in the playoffs at the end of his second full NHL campaign. We know he can move the puck well out of the defensive zone, he has size and speed on his side and he kills penalties. Nice big shot from the point as well. This is win-win for the Canucks as far as I’m concerned. The 6’2”, 220-pound undrafted defenceman was signed by the Panthers in 2008 after three seasons with the University of Minnesota Duluth of the WCHA. Garrison left $ on table – was offered “Wideman money” elsewhere – but wanted to play for hometown VAN, which held firm on internal $ scale. — Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) July 2, 2012 Mike Gillis
