There's a danger inherent in being the head of an organization, a company, or a country. If you become notable -- if you become synonymous with the front office in charge of your product -- then you become more than in charge. You're part of the identity. If something goes awry in the front office, blame gets tossed at you. Is it always fair? No. Some people will always hate just to hate. Some people will boo because it's a force of habit. It's still a part of the job, however, and I believe that Gary Bettman is more than aware that it comes with the territory of being the commissioner of the NHL. It's not an easy job, by any means. Hockey fans are amazingly protective of their sport, and many resent someone who never played -- heck, Bettman's a lawyer who came over from the NBA. That doesn't exactly exude to a vast majority of people reasons to trust him. Bettman's made unpopular decisions, especially encouraging expansion in regions t...

Bettman, mayor try to calm Oiler fans

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman downplayed the threat of the Oilers moving to Seattle on Tuesday as the Edmonton mayor predicted that an NHL team in Seattle wouldn't sell out its games. Bettman says an arena deal in Edmonton is achievable, ''and with a new arena there should be no reason to have any doubts about the future of the Oilers in Edmonton.'' The team...

Eklund: Bettman and Fehr Sit Out Revenue Meeting... So What?

Everyone who covers NHL Hockey is feeling the pangs of trying to dig up meaningful news during the Lockout. So it is no real surprise as we enter the second week of the 2012 Lockout that some are reading all sorts of doom and gloom into the fact that neither Gary Bettman nor Don Fehr attended today's meeting related to the distribution timetable of 2011-12 season revenues from...

NHL Cancels entire preseason: Nobody noticed

Gary Bettman Hey, did you hear the one about the National Hockey League and their lockout of the players? No? Well, you are part of a rather large majority of people. The league, in a brief, tersely worded statement announced they are canceling all preseason games. They actually had some games scheduled leading up to what would have been the start of the 2012 season, just...

A lockout is not what Dolan wanted

While many are quick to blame Gary Bettman for the third lockout under his regime, the blame lies equally with the owners as well. Over 50% of owners in the NHL barely break even or lose money, and they have no qualms with locking out the players. These owners lose less money with a lockout than they do while the season is in full swing. James Dolan is not one of these owners. While...

Fehr, Bettman not at NHL revenue meeting

TORONTO (AP) -- Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr are sitting out a meeting between the NHL and NHL Players' Association. The sides are gathering Monday to sign off on accounting of last year's hockey-related revenue. With no collective bargaining talks scheduled, the NHL commissioner and executive director of the NHLPA didn't take part. The NHL locked out its players nine...

Evening Line

You have to believe the owners will eventually gravitate toward accepting 50-50 as well, but right now the hardliners are simply not willing to go there. Those hardliners, we presume, include commissioner Gary Bettman and the owners whose teams are better off with no games being played than they would be if the season were a go. Owners in bad markets (we’d put money on...

OP/ED: Time to Call In Federal Mediators

In the nine days that have passed with no movement on CBA talks, representatives from the NHL & NHLPA have been very forth-coming in the media expressing their displeasure towards the other side. However, with the NHLPA dragging their feet through initial negotiations, Alex Ovechkin threatening to stay in Russia if the players give in again to steep NHL demands and Gary...

Red Wings overnight report: on Devellano’s comments, Ericsson’s options, the Griffins and…things.

The Red Wings' locked-out players will take part in their first informal practice in Troy today, and many of you will be skating in their place at Joe Louis Arena over the next three days, which seems strange...But this lockout has been nothing if not full of "weirdness." Just as it feels like we've been at this for much longer than eight days, for me, it feels...

Fehr, Bettman sit out meeting

Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr are sitting out a meeting between the NHL and NHL Players' Association.

Eklund: Have Events Since Sept. 15 Changed YOUR Opinion?

When HockeyBuzz conducted its first approval-rating poll of the respective jobs that Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr have done in handling CBA negotiations, the NHLPA had just presented its initial proposal to the NHL. The proposal was pretty well-received at first, and Fehr's corresponding positive approval rating was above 50 percent among the 12,000-plus hockey fans who voted...
