This game was silly from the get-go. Jordin Tootoo was out on the first shift with Helm and Miller and fought some guy. Great work. Take a bow, Jordin. The first several minutes of this game belonged to Winnipeg, who had a 2-on-1 that was broken up on a great play by DeKeyser, but unfortunately he had to take a penalty on his next shift because the Jets’ pressure was relentless. Did I miss something? Wasn’t this team terrible? Red Wings hang on for most of the first ten minutes, then fail to cash in on the powerplay, and in the final minute of the first Kyle Quincey does a total Kyle Quincey thing and lets the puck get by him at the blue line, then falls down, and Winnipeg scores on the subsequent breakaway. 0-1. Go team. In the second, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans were happy to welcome back Darren Helm as he took a puck on a breakaway, from a 2-on-0 really with Brain Lashoff, and fired it right into the goal tender. Wings eventually got their first goal when Zetterberg threw one towards Bertuzzi and it tickled the limb of Clitsome and goes into the gaping net. Not even joking, Chris Osgood said “off of Clitsome and into the gaping net.” It was incredible. This seemed to lift the Wings, as they were able to sustain pressure a bit better and generate some chances after that, including a pretty good one shorthanded by Stephen Weiss but because his eyes are too close together he was denied. Danny DeKeyser, however, had an absolute laser beam shorthanded off of an offensive zone draw. What a canon. Unfortunately Detroit gives another late period goal and we’re knotted at 2 after 2. Third period was essentially more of the same, with odd-man rushes and great scoring chances given up. Just over ten minutes in and it was 4-2 Manitobans. Wings respond by double shifting Z and Pav but to no real avail. Wings lose. No stars tonight, I’m too upset. Not necessarily with the outcome, not necessarily with the effort, and not necessarily with the fans’ crappy reactions and knee-jerk trigger-happy pulling of the terms like “pathetic” and “embarrassing,” but sort of a combination of all of it. The team just looked gassed. Not a huge deal, this isn’t a loss that will haunt us for very long. Jimmy Howard was incredible despite 4 goals by the way. Is everyone else looking forward to the next goal-drought/3-game losing streak as much as I am?
