Detroit Red Wings
Justin Abdelkader had his first NHL hat trick, Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists and the Detroit Red Wings ended Anaheim's club-record 13-game home winning streak Friday night with a 5-1 victory over the Ducks.
Detroit began a four-game road trip with the first of back-to-back games against the Pacific Division leaders, who beat the Red Wings 5-2 in their only other meeting on Feb. 15 at Joe Louis Arena. The teams meet again on Sunday at Honda Center.
Jimmy Howard allowed fewer than three goals for the eighth time in his past nine starts and had 33 saves.
Coming off an emotional come-from-behind 4-2 home win over Chicago in a game featuring the teams with the top two records in the NHL, the Ducks couldn't extend the momentum against Detroit, which turned several defensive mistakes into goals.
The Red Wings chased goalie Viktor Fasth to the bench after he gave up Abdelkader's second of the game, at 3:06 of the second period, to make it 3-1.
Fasth, who faced ju...
BEST OF MAXIM
Justin Abdelkader did not score in the Detroit Red Wings’ first 23 games this season, and he managed a mere three goals through 30 games. Friday night in an important game in Anaheim, Abdelkader lit the lamp three times in 19 minutes and 10 seconds.
After Teemu Selanne handed the Ducks a 1-0 lead, Abdelkader made a terrific move to the net and beat goalie Victor Fasth to knot the...
You know what? Jimmy Howard has become an elite goaltender and the majority of Detroit fans probably haven’t noticed.
The goaltending position in Detroit has always been a touchy subject as its right there with being a Tigers closer or Lions starting quarterback. And whether it was Chris Osgood, Dominic Hasek, Curtis Joesph or everyone’s favorite during the early 90′s Tim Cheveldale...
My apologies for the lateness of this one: I was feeling under the weather today.
Anyway, the Red Wings flew from Detroit to Anaheim on Thursday afternoon, and instead of resting their legs, they practiced ahead of an incredibly challenging pair of games against the Ducks on Friday (10 PMEDT, FSD Plus/NHL Network U.S.) and Sunday (8 PM EDT, FSD):
Babcock said he doesn...
"From our perspective, how it affects the Detroit Red Wings - we need to win some games. I look at the trade deadline, and there are buyers and sellers, and those that stand pat. And those that stand pat are teams that are on the bubble. You don't want to throw a lot of assets at something that you're not sure if you're going to miss the playoffs. I'm talking...
This is what Justin Abdelkader accomplished in the Red Wings' 5-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night:
Between Abdelkader's hat trick (the box score for your free Arby's curly fries can be found here), Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk's 3-point nights (including Datsyuk registering his 250th goal and 500th and 501st assists) and Jimmy Howard'...
It's 11-something AM on the West Coast and after 2 in Metro Detroit, and while Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau stated that his team would practice the day after their 5-1 loss to Detroit last night (their Twitter account posted a picture of the team practicing as I was writing this), I don't recall Red Wings coach Mike Babcock stating definitively whether the team would practice...
The following phrases were said tonight: “Franzen wins the race” “Power play goal, Detroit” and “Abdelkader with the hat trick!” And they were all true. I’m scared, too. This game was a lot like the won the Wings just lost to the Wild. The home team carried the play, but the road team scored on their few chances.
And I'm so thrilled for Abby, I'm not going...
After taking hit after hit from the Anaheim Ducks in the third period of the Detroit Red Wings’ 5-1 win on Sunday, Brendan Smith finally decided to drop the gloves. He did so after being challenged (and charged, without a call) by Ducks forward Bobby Ryan.
Smith landed a couple of shots before Ryan tumbled to the ice — completing the third fight of that game, all involving Wings...
The Detroit Red Wings wrap up their back-to-back series against the Anaheim Ducks tonight (8 PM EDT, FSD/FS West/97.1 FM) and begin a set of literal back-to-backs as the team's going to play the Coyotes on Monday (10 PM EDT, FSD/NHL Network U.S.) facing the same task the Wings did before their 5-1 win over Anaheim: Detroit has to "keep up with the Joneses."
Between me ferrying the mom to the tax man (good news on that front, we're getting $$ back) and getting back here, a second slate of game-day updates (not involving Ken Holland's stance on trades) hit the wires ahead of tonight's game between the Red Wings and Ducks (10 PM EDT, FSD/NHL Network U.S./NHL Network Canada/WXYT AM):
We'll start with the Ducks' side...
DET sit 7th in the Conference today; 3 points from 4th, and 3 points from 11th.
Last GDT I was predicting all doom and gloom for this road trip - and we won? That just proves how little I know about hockey.
But I do know about superstition - there is no chance in hell for Detroit today; we are doomed. Play it Slow-hand!

The Anaheim Ducks announced tonight that they have given Patrick Maroon a two year, one way extension. Maroon was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round, 161st overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Acquired from Philadelphia with David Laliberte in exchange for Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson back on Nov. 21, 2010, Maroon has appeared in 13 career NHL games...
The Detroit Red Wings will begin a slate of "on the road and still on the road" games against Anaheim tonight (10 PM EDT, FSD/NHL Network U.S. and NHL Network Canada = Center Ice/GCL blackouts/WXYT AM), and the Ducks' morning skate produced predictable news...
Just a hunch but it looks like Corey Perry might be in tonight for Ducks. Again, just a hunch.
