On Thursday, 22-year-old Jared Staal made his NHL debut for the Carolina Hurricanes after being called up earlier this week from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Making a momentous occasion that much sweeter, he did so alongside two of his brothers, Eric and Jordan, as the Hurricanes faced the New York Rangers, who coincidentally have another one of the Staal brothers, Marc (although he’s out of lineup with an eye injury). The icing on the cake was that Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller allowed the Staal brothers to start the game on the same line, surprisingly becoming the third set of brothers to play on the same line in NHL history. With all three brothers about to compete as teammates, one Eric’s sons made an adorable sign wishing his dad and two uncles good luck. ‏@MikeSundheim: Adorable. It was such an obviously big moment for the Staal family that Henry Staal, the father of four NHL-playing boys, flew up to see Jared’s debut and watch three of his sons play on the same team. Asked if he ever envisioned having sons playing in the NHL, the proud father said, “Not in a million years, in all honesty. It’s a dream come true. Playing on the outdoor rink or playing minor hockey, driving around and going, ‘Oh, is the season ever going to end?’ that sort of thing, and now to have this. And the guys are all excited for each other, which is really nice.” That’s putting it mildly. And even though Marc was unable to play, Jared mentioned it was nice to see him nonetheless. “It was good to catch up with him,” Jared said. “He was joking around that his teammates are going to be harder on him now that there’s three of us on this team.” Seemingly unimaginable, right? It defies logic that it’s the third time that has happened in NHL history. But it has, and Eric’s son has the sign to commemorate it.
