At the beginning of December, I picked Mike Weber of the Buffalo Sabres as the worst regular player in the league this year.   He isn't a great defenceman but he had shown that he was good enough to eat some minutes without hurting you much.  On a weak Buffalo team he was thrust over his head into a top four role and he struggled.  He is too good a player to remain the absolute worst regular in a full NHL season.  Given a new coach in buffalo in Ted Nolan, Weber has had a chance to begin to turn things around.  Weber has two assists now and his puck possession numbers like +/- and Corsi are not getting bad at the same rates.  I think the worst regular in the NHL this season has been Zac Rinaldo of the Philadelphia Flyers.  He has played all 41 games for the Flyers this season.  Despite dressing for every game, Rinaldo does not get a regular shift.  He averages seven and a half minutes a game and usually against weak opposition and in non-critical points of the game.  He has ma...

Zenon Konopa's bogus journey from Minneapolis to Buffalo

Zenon Konopka, like a whole bunch of people, had to deal with a travel disaster over the last couple days. The problem for Konopka: he was trying to make it to Buffalo from Minnesota — the Sabres, his boyhood team, claimed him on waivers and wanted him in the lineup for Saturday. Here's the blow-by-blow: The original plan was to fly from Minneapolis to New York City to...

Finland beats Sweden in OT to win World Juniors title

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 9:42 of overtime to give Finland its third world junior hockey title, 3-2 over Sweden on Sunday. Ristolainen picked up the puck along the right boards, beat defenseman Robert Hagg as he cut in front of the goal and slid a backhander under goalie Oscar Dansk's right leg pad. Ristolainen has one goal in 19 games this season...

Should Tyler Myers Face A Discipline Hearing?

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers could face a suspension or fine for his hit to the head of Devils left wing Dainius Zubrus in tonight’s game at First Niagara Center. The NHL’s Department is in the process of taking a closer look at the hit tonight and we should hear something Sunday about whether Myers will have a hearing. The...

Wild notebook: Konopka claimed on waivers by Sabres

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Looking for two-way play throughout all four lines, the Minnesota Wild exposed center Zenon Konopka to waivers Thursday knowing they might lose the veteran enforcer to another team. On Friday, Konopka was claimed by the Buffalo Sabres, who Minnesota beat 4-1 on Thursday night. "It was not about being prepared to move on without him," Wild coach Mike Yeo...

Sabres claim Konopka off waivers

The Buffalo Sabres have been searching for some veterans and it seems as though they have finally found some much-needed veteran leadership to join the team. After being placed on the Waivers by the Minnesota Wild, the Sabres claimed forward Zenon Konopka. In 36 games played with the Wild this season, Konopka has just one goal and one assist. The Sabres claimed Zenon following the...

Year in Review: Buffalo Sabres

PHOTO COURTESY BILL WIPPERT/SABRES.NHL.COM With 2013 officially in the books, the NYSK writers wanted to take some time to talk about the ups and downs of the past year (mostly downs for all of our teams). Today, we will look at the year in review for the Buffalo Sabres. In this year-end special, we will talk about the good, the bad, and the outlook for 2014. Hockey in general had...

Sabres slip past Devils 2-1

Matt D'Agostini's first goal of the season kept the Buffalo Sabres on a roll at home. D'Agostini's rebound goal at 11:49 of the third period lifted the Sabres to their fifth straight home win, a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. ''We're never going for pretty,'' D'Agostini said. Linus Omark found Steve Ott to the...

Sunday Morning Rumor Talk

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, - Though many expect Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller to get moved that may not be the case. A UFA in the off-season, the new GM is expected to try to sign him and the Sabres may not be able to get what they want in return if they do move him. The asking price for Miller is three prospects and a No. 1 pick in return if they are going to make...

Sabres claim enforcer off waivers from Wild

Konopka was put on waivers on Thursday after playing in 36 games and claimed Friday. He has a goal and an assist...

Russia Beats Canada For WJC Bronze

from the CP at NHL.com, Mikhail Grigorenko and Eduard Gimatov scored in the first period as Russia sent Canada home without a medal at the world junior championship for a second year in a row with a 2-1 victory in the bronze-medal game on Sunday. Josh Morrissey made a mostly unemotional game interesting when he beat Andrei Vasilevski 7:10 into the third period, but Canada...

Sabres wake up halfway through game, beat Devils 2-1

It started out like most other Sabres and Devils games - boring, listless, neutral zone hockey - and had the First Niagara Center dozing off by the end of the first. And while it never quite turned into a barnburner, the Sabres managed to wake themselves up and take control of the last 30 minutes en route to a 2-1 win. After a first period that had us all questioning our fandom...
