Flames sign D Smith for 2 years, $1.55M (AP)
The Calgary Flames have re-signed defenseman Derek Smith to a $1.55 million, two-year contract. The Flames announced the deal Wednesday. Smith is currently sidelined with a high ankle sprain. He has two goals and eight assists in 32 games this season. Smith originally signed as a free agent with the Flames on July 13, 2011.

Flames D Smith out 6-to-8 weeks with ankle injury
Calgary Flames defenseman Derek Smith will be sidelined six-to-eight weeks with a high ankle sprain.
Smith had been playing well of late, recording eight points in 15 games in December.
The 27-year-old Ontario native has collected two goals, eight assists and 12 penalty minutes this season.
