Rugby league, which has all the physicality of football or rugby union but without all the stoppages in play, is one of the world’s most grueling sports. As with any form of full-contact football, rugby league players, out of a love for their craft, put their bodies at risk of life-altering injury. Paul Wood of the Warrington Wolves of England’s Super League*, for example, gave up a gonad for the cause of winning a title in Europe’s top rugby league league. Prop forward Paul Wood (left) of the Warrington Wolves made the ultimate sacrifice in yesterday’s Super League Grand Final against Leeds. (Photo from the Press Association) Early in the second half of yesterday’s Grand Final match between the Wolves and the Leeds Rhinos, Wood took a knee to the groin, resulting in a ruptured testicle. But, this being the championship game, Wood made no mention of his injury and kept playing. Even in post-game interviews, he said nothing about one of his sexual organs being irreparably damaged.
