Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has explained signing a one-year deal with Atletico Madrid.

Azpilicueta left Chelsea this week to sign for Atletico in a free transfer.

On penning a 12 month deal, he explained to Mundo Deportivo: "I'm very happy to be here.

"The first hours and first days were fantastic. I can't wait for the season to start. I'm a player who has never asked any coach to play in a certain position. I come to help the club as much as possible thanks to my experience. New positions are always a challenge and an opportunity to keep improving. Until the last day.

"Why only one year of contract? I'm 33 and I can't change that. Last year I signed for two years with Chelsea and this year I decided to change because I thought it was for the best. Contract years must be earned on the field. The past is very beautiful, but you have to prove your worth every day."
