Italian referee Daniele Orsato struggled to hold back the tears after PSG-Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night as it was the last Champions League match he officiated.

Orsato, 48, is expected to retire after Euro 2024, so last night’s Champions League semifinal second leg between Borussia Dortmund and PSG in Paris was his last appearance in the competition.

Orsato struggled to hold back the tears after the final whistle and before hugging his assistants at the Parc des Princes.

The Italian referee was in the spotlight at the Parc des Princes last night when he initially awarded a penalty kick to the home side before quickly changing his mind and giving a free kick instead. A silent VAR check confirmed Ousmane Dembele was fouled just outside the Borussia Dortmund box.

Orsato and Marco Guida are the Italian referees selected for Euro 2024.

Orsato has officiated 55 Champions League games in his career, including the 2019-20 Final between Bayern Munich and PSG.
