World Cup winner Desailly reckons the canny United ace and his advisers had repeated the same trick they pulled off three years ago.
Then Rooney insisted he wanted to join Manchester City before being persuaded to say at Old Trafford with a new five-year deal which made him the club's best-paid player.
Ex-Chelsea skipper Desailly believes his supposed summer attempt to join the Blues was a smokescreen and said: "I wasn't really sure he wanted to make a move to Chelsea.
"I think it is more business than a desire to move from the club.
"Three years ago he was very clever telling the club that he wants to move to Manchester City. The club have allowed him to get the biggest salary and sign a new contract.
"This time I think they have tried again - it is business they play the game and try to earn more.
