Red Wings-Blues quick take: Captain Z serves up a platter of curly fries

That was bizarre...The Red Wings' 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues may go down in "Weird Game" history, but it was nonetheless incredibly satisfying to watch the Wings both overcome the Blues and themselves as this team in progress attempts to claw out an identity for itself. The Wings absolutely raced out to a two-goal first period lead thanks to a PP and then...

How’s Business These Days?

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette, The Canadiens have been announcing sellout crowds at each of their home games, but for the first time in more than a decade you can walk up to the Bell Centre box office on the day of a game and buy a ticket. There have been pockets of empty seats at each game, but they could be explained by looking at the fistful of tickets scalpers...

What?

- Earlier today the Boston Bruins announced Shawn Thornton will miss 7-10 days due to a concussion suffered last night. How do they know that, is it a 'minor' concussion, maybe a 'small' concussion? - Reading different websites the last few days, many Blues fans feel it is their time. Well my suggestion to them is to ask the Sharks, Canucks and last year's Predators...

You Want A Rivalry? You Got One Now, Sister

It's been a long time since I've seen the Wings dominated like they were opening night.  At one point the shot totals were just obscene...like 24 to 4.  The Wings special teams were so bad that we'd forgotten about our complaints from years past about Whiskey or William Tell on the point.  Those memories were glorious compared to what the Blues wrought two Saturdays...

Unassisted

It's fairly unusual to have no assists given when a team scores four times in a game, especially when they are the only goals that team scored.  It almost makes you think of the dread hazard: "playing like individuals instead of a team."  In the case of the Sharks last night, I don't think that was the situation at all, though all of their goals were unassisted...

Panthers Were Close To Getting Healthy

from Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel, Just when it seems the Panthers were getting healthy this week with the returns of forward Kris Versteeg on Tuesday and Marcel Goc on Thursday, they lost forward Scottie Upshall for at least a month with an injured ankle sustained during a fight with former teamates James White in last night’s wild third period. Upshall was on crutches...

Now What Phoenix?

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC, Jamison says he will continue to pursue ownership, but how? If he had the money, this would be over. If he could find a willing partner to take advantage of the sweet lease deal, this would be over. Or was he asking for something that potential partners didn't want? Maybe a stake in ownership without putting up the cash for it? Maybe...

The NHL Drug Testing Program

from Sarah Kwak of Sports Illustrated, For years, the prevailing thought has been that the NHL doesn't have a performance-enhancing drug problem. It isn't a part of hockey's culture, people claim. Steroids wouldn't help hockey players score goals in the same way they would help, say, ballplayers slug pitches out of the park. There hasn't been much evidence...

Marchand Schools Us On Respect

“Yeah, [Lindy Ruff] wants to be a big shot, and that’s not the best play to do.  That’s pretty disrespectful.  If he wants to be like that, that’s fine. We just have to move on.” - Brad Marchand, after Ruff called a timeout with 14 seconds left in last night's 7-4 Buffalo win over Boston. I don't know about you, but I'm certainly relieved.  It's good...

Bettman Not Talking But McNall Is

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail, “He’s the little guy from New York who came from basketball,” said (Bruce) McNall. “If he was packaged a different way, it would be a whole different ballgame. He tends to get a little bit of the raw end of the deal because of that alone. “Remember Gary is ultimately responsible to the owners and they are going to ultimately...

Did Ruff Do Anything Wrong?

from Mike Cole of NESN, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff called a timeout with just 13.6 seconds to play and his team leading 7-4. Ruff defended the move by saying he didn’t like having Lane MacDermid, a noted fighter, lined up against one of his own skill guys. So, he called timeout and changed things up, which involved sending John Scott over the bench to keep the peace...

Not Just Another Game

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province, Ten months after the fact, the hit still looks every bit as calculated, every bit as cynical and every bit as dangerous as the night it was delivered.
