Joe Gibbs on the return of Crispy M&M’S and the forgotten Redskins’ dynasty

For an unknown reason, NFL history has robbed the Redskins dynasty of the 1980s and early 90s of the recognition it deserves. But the real question is, why? NFL fans remember the Packers championship teams of the 60s, the Steelers of the 70s, the 49ers of the 80s, the Cowboys of the 90s, and the Patriots of the present day. But no one remembers the Joe Gibbs-led Redskins. From...

Seahawks on verge of luckiest Super Bowl ever; end with biggest choke job ever

This was the greatest Super Bowl ever. The ending was stunning in so many ways, from Tom Brady leading a fourth quarter comeback against the Seattle defense, only to be followed by another miraculous catch that seemed to spell doom again for the Patriots, to what can easily be described as the worst play call in NFL history. Here are some thoughts with some real time tweets mixed...

Some Seahawks are whining

Here’s something Earl Thomas recently tweeted out: Yesterday I said my shoulder was a 10 … Wake up the next morning and I have a blood test for HGH .. League office distraction — Earl Thomas (@Earl_Thomas) January 29, 2015 Hmm . . . did he ever consider that HGH is needed when we had 6’5, 280 pound monster running 4.5 forty times? Another genius on the Seattle roster...

Le’Veon Bell injury stops Steelers

If you read the Pittsburgh papers, there are plenty of reasons why this Steelers team couldn’t get past Baltimore in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. But most of that talk is just filler for sports columnists. It all starts with the loss of Le’Veon Bell who emerged as one of the top running backs in football this season. Ben Roethlisberger is still an elite quarterback,...

R.I.P. Stuart Scott

There’s sad news today as ESPN anchor Stuart Scott has passed away following a battle with cancer at the age of 49. Scott was talented and entertaining, and he was always a class act. I saw him in person several years ago at the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards where he was the MC as you can see in the photo above. Our thoughts go out to Scott’s family and everyone at ESPN.

What happened to RGIII?

Several years ago I attended the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Awards and RGIII was there as one of the presenters. He was riding high as a high draft pick after the Redskins had mortgaged their future by trading a boatload of draft picks. Meanwhile, as a Browns fan, I had to hear about how the Browns blew it by not offering even more for the right to draft him. Several...

NET10 Wireless #FreedForSpeed NASCAR Event Rides Us Hard, Puts Us Back Wet

Inadvertently, the above shirtless NASCAR fan, with a canister of what we can safely assume is “Purple Drank,” a southern beverage of choice, dangling from his loins, summed up the entire three-day NET10 Wireless NASCAR event. NET10 — with no contracts, plans starting at $40 a month for unlimited service, and over 100,000 locations — doesn’t care about your past relationships...

Big College Football Saturday

After another wild day of college football, here are some observations: - Barring a slew of wild upsets that let a 2-loss team into the mix, the real contenders for the final four spots is now down to eight teams – Mississippi State and Alabama from the SEC, Florida State from the ACC, Oregon and Arizona State from the Pac 12, TCU and Baylor from the Big 12 and Ohio State from...

The embarrassment in Michigan

Let’s put aside for a moment this hideous sweatshirt Brady Hoke was wearing during today’s game, or how stupid he looked clapping and trying to rally his team after this running play was blown up by Michigan State. The embarrassment on the field is starting to be matched by the antics of Hoke and his players before and after games. The Michigan players decided to bring a stake...

Academic fraud at North Carolina

The debacle in North Carolina poses a real problem for the NCAA. The North Carolina basketball program is one of the premier brands in college basketball, but the NCAA makes billions with the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA slammed Ohio State and USC over tattoos and improper benefits, but here we have a situation where football players, basketball players and other athletes were funneled...

Madison Bumgarner quiets Royals

The commentary above brings up a good point – the Giants probably needed this game more with Madison Bumgarner on the mound. They needed their ace to step up and he did. He also stopped the ridiculous post-season winning streak by the Royals. Now we’ll see how the Royals react. They’ve been resilient during games, and now they have to bounce back from a home loss and avoid...

Florida State hangs on against Notre Dame

The game lived up to the hype. Notre Dame gave Florida State everything they could handle last night in Tallahassee, with the winning touchdown being taken off the board on what turned out to be the correct call. Both Jameis Winston and Everett Golson were spectacular, and it seemed like whoever had the ball last would win. As it turned out, Notre Dame thought they had it but the...

Bizarre Percy Harvin trade

The NFL world was pretty shocked yesterday with the news that Seattle traded Percy Harvin to the Jets. It started to make more sense, at least from Seattle’s point of view, when reports started to surface that Harvin was a cancer in the clubhouse. In fact, the move seems brilliant all of a sudden from their point of view. Pete Carroll has established himself as one of the best...

Is Russell Wilson an elite quarterback?

This question is being debated quite a bit since Russell Wilson dazzled recently in prime time against the Redskins. Frankly, Wilson is capable of making some incredible plays, and he’s definitely one of the best improvisers in football. I was never high on Wilson and he’s made me and other critics eat my words. That said, he’s in the perfect situation with a great defense...

Fran Tarkenton scolds AJ McCarron

This is pretty hilarious. AJ McCarron has a pretty inflated view of himself, and that came across when he criticized the current Alabama team by saying it didn’t have the leadership the team had last year (that would be himself, AJ McCarron). He also made some comments about Nick Saban “handcuffing” the offense. The great Fran Tarkenton reacted with a classic rant about McCarron...

Fox investigation shows FSU obstructed Jameis Winston investigation

Fox released stunning results of its investigation into how Florida State “handled” the Jameis Winston investigation when he faced rape allegations. In some ways this shouldn’t be stunning at all – the campus police and athletic department basically did everything possible to undermine the investigation and keep Winston on the field. They stacked the deck in favor of the...

Is Jay Cutler the next Jeff George?

Brian Billick made an interesting comparison today, wondering if Jay Cutler is the next Jeff George. Naturally, bears fans should be terrified by the prospect, though many of them were dumbfounded when the Bears gave him a monster contract extension. The comparison may be appropriate in that both men have great arms along with a gunslinger mentality when playing the position. But...

Kirk Cousins isn’t Superman

Can we stop with all the talk about Kirk Cousins being better than RGIII? Everyone can have a bad day, but tonight Cousins had one for the ages. I think he’s on four interceptions now. I’ve lost count. Of course, his offensive line blows, so his fans can offer up some excuses. But Cousins has been ordinary when teams have had a week to prepare and game plan for him. He has some...
