Following his unprecedented success at the 2012 London Olympics, American swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, said that he was hanging up his Speedo and retiring from the sport at 27 years of age. Then a rumor started circulating on Twitter that Phelps had a change of heart and planned on returning to the pool at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. According to Peter Busch, the weeknight anchor for the NBC affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida, Phelps has confirmed, via a tweet, that yes indeed he will be returning for the next summer Olympic games. Via Busch’s Twitter account… EXCLUSIVE: I have confirmed that Michael Phelps is planning a comeback. nbc-2.com/story/22286148… — Peter Busch (@peterbuschTV) May 17, 2013 Talk about a scoop. Phelps, however, has yet to confirm this rumor himself, and his only response has been a tweet that, while not a firm denial, seems to contradict Busch’s story… Why do I keep getting texts about coming back? Do ppl really believe everything they hear or read? There are … m.tmi.me/VVJFR — Michael Phelps (@MichaelPhelps) May 18, 2013 …many ppl in the world that think they have a “story”… So there we are. Who do you believe? Busch stands behind his story, and Phelps really didn’t squash the rumor with his “denial,” so it’s hard to say. Here’s hoping that Peter Busch is correct, because even at 31-years-old, Michael Phelps would still be an aquatic force in the 2016 summer games.
