Since when is it a ball girl or boy’s responsibility to corral wild animals and creepy insects that wander on the tennis court? Last time I checked wrangling wayward tennis balls was the only thing noted in their job title or description. And is a cricket on the court that much of a distraction or safety hazard that it has to be immediately removed? I mean, what’s the worst that could happen—it gets stepped on and the person responsible for squashing the bug is the lucky recipient of cricket innards on the bottom of their expensive tennis shoe.

This poor ball girl at the Australian Open was called upon to remove a cricket during the day two men’s singles match between Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Lleyton Hewitt for reasons unknown. Perhaps Stebe was afraid the cricket might attack his ankles with it’s vicious mandibles of death, or his chirping would lull him into a state of extreme relaxation, leading to an easy point or two for Hewitt. Or maybe the Aussie Open officials just wanted the lost insect to pay admission for his courtside seat.

All I know is, the ball girl got rid of the cricket quickly, admirably, and hilariously.

Yep, exterminator is not going to be a career option for that ball girl…and I’m sure that’s fine by her.
