Roger Federer, the world’s number one tennis player, recently received an online death threat prior to a Masters series event in Shanghai, China.

According to various reports, an anonymous poster using the name “Blue Cat Polytheistic Religion Founder 07″ posted the threat on the popular Chinese website, Baidu.com.  The posting read:

“On October 6, I plan to assassinate Federer for the purpose of tennis extermination.”

The threat was accompanied by a doctored photo of a axe-wielding executioner standing next to a decapitated Federer.  Tournament director Yang Yibin confirmed the threat.

A tournament official told the Shanghai Youth Daily that security would be heightened around Federer and other players during the tournament.

A writer for It’s Always Sunny in Detroit confirmed that he would have ditched the tennis tournament and gotten out of China.  Sorry China, it isn’t worth it.  Death threats to (anyone) a harmless/classy tennis player is uncalled for and disgusting.
