The 27th-ranked Austrian underwent surgery on a torn tendon in October and needs more time to recover, the Austria Press Agency reports on Saturday.

(January 4, 2014) World No. 27 Jurgen Melzer announced on his twitter account that his is withdrawing from the Australian Open due to a left shoulder injury.
The Austrian had surgery on a torn tendon back in October and is still recovering.
The Australian Open begins on January 13.
