MTG Black Lotus Sold for $3 Million

One of the rarest Magic: The Gathering cards known as the Black Lotus recently sold for a record-breaking $3 million. The recent sale makes the artifact card the most expensive MTG card ever sold in history. The transaction took place in a private meet-up between Adam Cai of Pristine Collectibles and a mystery buyer. Cai sold his customer an Alpha version of the card that had a CGC Cards’ Pristine 10 grade.

It’s no surprise that the Alpha Black Lotus fetched a hefty amount. The card’s Beta counterpart, which had a CGC Cards’ Near Mint 8.5 grade, previously sold for $615,000 at an auction in 2023. Considering how the Alpha is an earlier version, it’s considered more rare than the Beta, giving the card more value.

What makes the Black Lotus so special, one might ask. The artifact card is one of the holy grails in MTG due to it being one of the first prints. The card first launched in the Alpha and Beta sets which were simultaneously released alongside the game’s debut in 1993. Given the card’s age, it’s more difficult to find it in local game stores in this day and age. It might even be impossible to find it in any store for that matter. A reprint of the Black Lotus came out in the later years, however, it’s less valuable.

For newer players wanting to have the Black Lotus in their possession, it’s worth noting that the card isn’t legal to use in any MTG format. The only way players can use the legendary card is in Vintage format. With that said, the artifact card is mostly purchased for collection purposes. The same goes for the 2014 reprint of the card.

Black Lotus shatters The One Ring’s record

Back in 2023, famous rapper Post Malone purchased The One Ring MTG card from Brook Trafton. At the time of the purchase, Postie set the record for buying the most expensive MTG card in history. Trafton initially didn’t want to let go of the card knowing that it had a lot of value. However, when Malone contacted the 37-year-old, the rapper gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Both parties agreed on $2 million leaving everyone happy. Postie got the card he wanted while Brook claimed the biggest bag of money in his life.

Post Malone is one of the biggest MTG players. Fans of the game will often see him participate in games with well-known influencers like the Command Zone crew and Tolarian Community College’s Professor.

While the identity of the Black Lotus buyer remains a mystery, it’s hilarious to think that it could be Postie who bought the card after all. If it were hypothetically the rapper who purchased the card, we can’t blame him for keeping his identity a secret. We all know he has all the money in the world, but it’s likely that he might want to keep things lowkey to avoid people judging him for spending a total of $5 million on two single cards.
