My take on the VP Debate

Watched the debates Thursday night. (Yeah, I do the politics thing!) Hardly as entertaining as I thought it would be. I would've much rather watch Tina Fey and Steve Martin do a parody.

One thing does burn me up, though. I think it is insulting to women everywhere that Sarah Palin was somehow considered successful for not falling on her face. As much as women don't like the glass ceiling, we should despise the closer tee. Low expectations are as dangerous as limited opportunity. If she's going to be in the race for vice president, we need to apply to her the same standard as we would a man. We should expect the same level of intelligence and the same command of the issues as we would from any other candidate. Why? Because we can meet it! When Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama went at it in the Democratic Primary, nobody was saying, "Wow, Hillary isn't making mistakes! She can win!" The stride she made was that she proved we can go toe-to-toe, we can be as capable and knowledgeable as any man. I respected Obama because he never tried to belittle her or act as if he expected anything else. A woman meeting the same academic or professional standard as men is normal! (And to all of you trying to apply this to my arguments for the WNBA -- this isn't about dunking, this is about mental aptitude and political expertise.) A woman not making herself look stupid is not an accomplishment! The fact that Sarah Palin didn't implode at the podium is not a victory. That's like somebody saying I had a good game because I didn't double-dribble. Or being surprised when a Black man "speaks so well." Or Sue Bird accusing me of not knowing the meaning of unevolved and antiquated. LOL

Sorry. That whole hooray-she-didn't-fall-on-her-face bit just pisses me off a little.

Anyway, there were some highlights, though:

*Sarah Palin was a gangsta. She came out practically from the get-go and punk'd the moderator and Biden. "I ain't answering yo questions, fool!" I can't believe they let that go. I would've kept asking her the same question. Why agree to a debate if you're not going to, uh, debate? She should've at least explained why she was different from Bush when Biden went on that tirade about McCain being the same as Bush.

*Biden choking up talking about his kids was deep. Something about seeing a grown man cry, or on the verge of tears, is touching. Well, not any grown man. It's always some dude crying on Project Runway and, somehow, it doesn't tug at the heart strings. While we're talking about tears, it is kind of shady that when Biden cries, it's accepted as genuine and moving (and no disrespect to him, what he went through has to be painful still). But when it was a woman, such as when Hillary Clinton caught a little fur ball in her throat during the primaries iż˝ actually, it wasn't even choking up as much as it was a sudden switch to a somber tone iż˝ it's a sign of weakness! What if Palin had choked up? The Sandman woulda came on stage with a cane and yanked her off and asked her if she was on her period! It just amazes me, the double standard.

*Those winks into the camera were a knee-slapper. What was that? I felt like I just got holla'd at in the mall, like she wrote her number on my hand outside of Cinnabon and the wink was the goodbye. C'mon, Mrs. P! This is the presidential arena here. The winking and the Joe Six-Pack lines make you sound like the prep jock running for Student Body President. This debate was the time to show them you are also intellectual and intelligent. We know the hockey mom, pit bull with lipstick, moose-hunting stuff. You missed a chance to show us more. In fact, you probably made yourself a little too down home.

Nuff politics for now. Check out the WNBA Finals. Game 3. Going down tomorrow night.

I had a grandfather who was raised on a farm. Lived through the depression and died a millionaire. He was not the most eloquent in speech but his "home spun" wisdom was something to be treasured. His pragmatic and humble approach to life was very refreshing.
I don't know if Palin's folksy delivery is a show or if that is just who she is. If that is who she then I would rather have her be genuine then to try and pretend to be something she is not. It certainly has little to do with her ability to lead or contribute.
I agree that HIlary was not treated fairly. It was almost an approach of ,"let's wait for her to screw up or get emotional like a woman." If anything I liked seeing that side of Hillary as she seemed so mechanical to me. Regarding the double standard it all boils down to reputation. Women are perceived to be more emotional then men. I don't know if I would agree with that. I think they "express" their emotion more than men. Women traditionally go to tears to cope and men go to anger, not wanting to deal with their emotions. However, anger is being "emotional" just as crying is. Just expressed differently.
I really enjoy reading your blog. You are very passionate and articulate. Please keem em' coming!

Hahaha..
I don't think the Palin "not falling on her face" thing, was anything to do with women though. It most likely has to do with Palin..she had some bad moments with Katie Couric, and it was important for Palin to not fall on her face.
comparing her to Hillary is a little unfair, Hillary's actually a good debater and tends to make anyone she's debating look foolish..*unless they just sit there and agree with her..sorry, had to take the jab at Obama* I would have loved to have seen VP Barbie go up against Hillary, just because of how funny it would be. Senator Clinton would have torn Sarah apart. :D
Speaking of Obama, he needs to get more cutthroat in these things. We all know he's smarter than McCain, he needs to show it. Stop blabbering, stop conceding points, and hit him hard.

VOTE OBAMA and gluck on on your GAME

You need to marry me girl! Took the words right out of me mouth. What pissed me off was how they was focusing on the man/woman talking points instead of other issues b/c that just plays into her whole soccer mom thing and pulls in the women voters. You didn't see that during the presidential debate. You want to throw it down and be fair then let's talk about the black/white thing!

Funny, I was looking more at Biden and Palin and one thing that struck me terribly was Palin not being able to look at Biden for more then a few seconds before turning away. I don't know if she was disinterested or fearful of Biden but I'm not so sure that's the type I want in my White House.

LOL VOTE OBAMA

college basketball 24/7

www.collegebasketball247.blogspot.com

SHE SAID MAVERICK AND REFORM LIKE A MILLION TIMES RIGHT!!!! HAHA
I HEARD THAT MOST WNBA,NBA,AND NFL PLAYERS WERE VOTING FOR OBAMA? IF THAT'S TRUE HIT ME BACK!!!

and Biden repeated how McCain and Bush are the same people. over and over....I didnt hear Biden expaining how they were different either btw. and Biden could have been more respectful when speaking about McCain. Calling him John the whole time made him look inconsiderate and disrespectful, he could of at least taken the effort to say Senator McCain. come on.

That's pathetic, how many times have I heard "rumors" of Barack being a Muslim? That's disrespectful.

Last I heard this was politics not religion. Being religious in any way, shape, or form isn't disrespectful. Is being Muslim a bad thing?

She could've made a drinking game out of it. Every time she says "maverick"...

Or everytime Biden tried to be funny and wasn't....

"Why would anyone vote for Obama?"

There are about 5,278 reasons Here are a few.

Because McCain's 72 years old, unlikely to survive a first term, and Palin isn't qualified to be president of anything more than a local PTA chapter; because she's demonstrably and dangerously ignorant on important domestic and foreign policy issues; because she's a documented racist, because her husband is a traitorous extremist.... the list goes on.

And, more than anything else, because John McCain is a liar who has betrayed his own values, seeking the presidency.

I was someone who was ready to vote for McCain in 2000, and, in 2004 if he had accepted the VP ticket with Kerry.

Today, no. He's a shell of his former self, and he's not fit to serve. His VP pick is a pathetic insult to the intelligence of all american citizens.

You don't have to like Obama to realize that the Republican ticket and platform is a pile of manure and the only way forward is to abandon the failed policies of the past.

The scariest reason I see is that McCain needed a woman on his ticket, and the best he could come up with was Palin. As a woman, this is very discouraging to me. Palin talks a good game when asked the "right" questions, but avoids anything that is important and comes up with ridiculous excuses for her failures i.e. "You can see Russia from where I live", this is supposed to make her a good "Foreign Policies" candidate???

The idea McCain won't survive his first term is the lamest scare tactic liberals use. Beyond that, Palin is even more qualified than Obama to be president. Why? She has executive experience. Obama has community organizer experience, and "senate" experience during which time he spent more time writing books than pieces of legislation. TO say she's a racist and her husband is a traitor is inexcusable unless you have proof. I highly doubt you do.

Yet you like Biden, because why? He didn't even know when FDR served, thinks us paying taxes is "patriotic", and was proven to have lied outright 10 times during the debate Tuesday.

Sure, go ahead and vote Obama. Enjoy your higher taxes, your government susidized health care with lesser doctors. Enjoy your socialistic values of wealth redistribution.

MRBECKER712.. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??

YOU BEEN READING TO MUCH OF THAT OBAMANATION! LMAO

How do you know spluffy is a liberal?
How do you know Biden was lying? That does require, after all, special knowledge of intent.

Will the doctors in an Obama administration really be different than the doctors in a McCain presidency?

How about your scare tactic? The better doctors will renounce their citizenship or stop practicing medicine and we'll only have lesser ones.

Regarding socialism, Reagan said the same thing about medicare 50 years ago. and we still don't have socialism. Scare tactics. Ironic that you would toss that accusation out and then do it.

I haven't even mentioned your irresponsible reiteration of one of the more shallow Rovian claims that "Obama spent more time writing books than pieces of legislation." Obama has "sponsored" (few senators "author" legislation due to the presence of PAC and corporate lobbyists) over 100 bills and resolutions.

I may not agree with spluffy, but I'm pretty sure I won't be turning to you for guidance either.

Let's proffer opinions that are fact based, and not make a mockery of US democracy with propaganda.

Foolish ignorance, mrbecker712.

Palin's racism is well documented, as is the agenda of the secessonist (thus traitorous) Alaskan political party Ted Palin was, up until very very recently, a member of.

I *will* enjoy seeing the rich pay higher taxes, and government subsidized health care, and wealth redistribution. If it comes in the form of something resembling socialism -- I don't care what label you put on it, if it works. Capitalism has, in case you hadn't been reading the news lately, FAILED!

You said it good diana... She pisses me off. She acts like this is some kind of joke. And a lot of ppl that support her do to. She is running for the second highest office in our country not the town fair. She did not win the debate she barely answered any questions. Why does she keep tellin us about small town values. wat damn values? the rest of america doesnt have the same kind of values... cuz ure a hocky mom with a weird accent you got small town values? Last time i checked your own daughter is havin a baby...some good values you put in her. stop acting like you better then the rest of us. shes the female version of G.Bush with less experience.

MrBecker...your a tool. of course we are gonna have higher taxs wheather mccain or obama gets it. Wit the economic bailout and other things going on where do you think its gonna come from.

THANK YOU!!

LIKE.. I DONT CARE WHO YOU'RE VOTING FOR AS LONG AS WE KEEP THESE REPUBLICANS OUT OF OFFICE I'M ALL FOR IT!!

Dude, Tina Fey is killing Palin on SNL doncha know!

lol damn i just missed it

I like the Obama supporters...how many pieces of legislation did he write? None. How many BOOKS? Two. He takes a 1 week tour of Europe during his campaign, and NOW he suddenly knows foreign policy? Commmmeee onnnn people. Wake up!

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE JOHN MCCAIN FOUGHT FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE? I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE RICH I'M TALKING ABOUT THOSE THAT ARE LIVING IN WAR ZONES RIGHT NOW!!! I'M TALKING ABOUT THOSE THAT ARE LIVING IN POVERTY RIGHT NOW!!! YOUR PRESIDENT.. GEORGE BUSH HASN'T DONE ANYTHING TO HELP US OUT!!! NONE AT ALL CRIME RATES UP!!! JOB LOSS IS UP!!! EVERYTHINGS UP.. I'M SICK OF IT!!!! AND ALL THE REPUBLICANS CAN SAY IS " O.. WELL OBAMA WILL RAISE YOUR TAXES" GET THE BUCK OUT OF HERE MAN!!!!

actually, go to senate.gov

they have the official records and you'll see very simply that you are repeating a web-rumor.

I most definitely will vote for Obama. Since I as well as most Americans don't bring in an average of 250,000 I'm not too worried taxes under Obama will be higher than taxes under McCain. I'm also looking forward to Obama's health plan, if successful every American would have healthcare equal to those of the senate. Theirs are not subsidized and their doctors are I dare say better than yours I'm sure.

I look forward to an America that takes care of ALL their people despite their social, economic, racial, and gender status. It only can make us stronger, in the eyes of the world they can finally see us as true leaders that lead by example not dictators whose moral compass seems to be lead more often than not by greed and politics.

Excellent points, DT, I was having the same exact thoughts!!

It's funny that universal health care can be deemed extreme, but walking on the moon and building bombs big enough to wipe out entire countries isn't. I can't vote cuz I'm not American, but I live overseas and don't wanna see America invade Iran without at least talking to them first (trash talk don't count). McCain and Palin get America into Iran, China and Russia covertly and overtly support Iran, tensions rise with Pakistan, India gets ready, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan get ready..... and suddenly everybody's kung-fu fighting. World War 3 ain't so far away if Iran's invaded.

Which is why we need to keep the War Mongers out.

Hey Dee, when I first read the title of this new post, my first reaction was..."oh, this is gonna be good!" You didn't disappoint! Anyway, some thoughts:

If this country were coming off of eight years of peace and prosperity (like we were in the 2000 election) then maybe this whole 'folksy' Palin character would appeal to more people. But these are SERIOUS times we are living in right now. Our country is at a crossroads. Things ain't looking too good. Forgive me for not finding all this Joe Six Pack, soccer mom, maverick, "Say it ain't so, Joe" BS cute. For everyone that keeps saying that Palin is just "keepin' it real," in the words of Chris Rock..."yeah she's keepin' it real...real dumb."

Another great post, DT. Keep 'em coming :-)

Sorry Dee, but I beg to differ on the wink and the joe six pack line. You see, out of the four candidates running, Sarah Palin is the ONLY one who hasn't been completely tainted by Washington. She is down to earth and she is real. I personally think that people who are not blind party followers can connect with that. Any way, love the new do...:)

She herself said she doesn't know how Washington works and though I would love Washington to change it's ways, I'm realistic and understand it's NOT going to happen over night or even in four years.
Do you really want someone in there that doesn't know how to handle things????.

im with u on Sarah Palin keeping it real. but i like how she favors people in her family, I would do the same thing....people need to get off her ovaries if ya ask me, sure she aint the smartest politician but she is down to earth and human...

Would you wink during a job interview, LOL?
Because she did, five times, sooo wrong!

and now that troopergate report #1 is out it looks like she'd fit right in in Washington :O

No Spotella, there you go....Did she say she doesn't know how to handle things? I think that her record running the state of Alaska shows that she can handle things.

No bballfan, I said "SHE HERSELF SAID" Did you see the debate? It was on there she admitted to it.

Alaska is a nice place dont get me wrong (lots of land, nice feefle, nature, and bears) but the population at 700 K is nothing compared to managing 260+ million, which a VP should be doing...

notice how her face is perfectly done via Botox and underneath is Tommy Tutone color skins....But I love her glasses

I didn't want to point out the scarce population, but I' so happy someone did!!!!

Amazing that someone who is "for" her would add that caption to a post. It's comical!

does it really matter what she looks like?

no it doesnt, your insinuating stuffs. i waS just commenting on the pic....but shes beautiful for her age if ya ask me....

I agree totally with Booker. Her looks do not matter, it's just who would attatch THAT photo to a post?

Deleware population:864,764
Alaska population:683,478

Difference 181,286. Wow what a big difference.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=state+population&aq=f&oq=

The difference is she is the one who has been in her state actually running things and make decisions. And Spotella, I know that she said she was a Washington outsider. You ask me if I wanted someone who doesn't know how to handle things? I answered you. The picture was just an added bonus....;)

I have to tell you bball, though my mind is not completely made up, continuing to see that picture is giving her less and less of a chance of getting a vote from me.

Palin as a person doesnt bother me...the fact that she is running for vice president does. She has said in the past that she doesnt even know what a VP does. She has been running things in Alaska which is one of the least populated and least diverse place in our country. How would she have our best interest in mind. its not that i dont think she knows whats going on in the rest of America. she keeps referencing how she is a hockey mom like there are a billion hockey moms in the us. I know ppl will say this is a scare tactic but if something god forbid happens to McCain i do not want her representing our country. She is the female version of Bush. I do not want an idiot as our president again. We need someone who is confident and knows how to carry themselves. ...p.s how sweet would it have been if Clinton went against Palin....damn Clinton would of destroyed her. Clinton would of called her out and asked her to stop changing the subject and answer the questions given to her
