Daniela Holmqvist, a rookie on the Ladies European Tour, was playing in a pre-qualifying tournament for the season-opening LPGA event, the ISPS Handa Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia, when, after getting out of some trouble in the deep rough, she felt a sharp sting in her ankle. Holmqvist swatted away what she described as a large, black creature with a red spot on it’s back before doubling over in pain. Turns out the creature was a Black Widow spider, and as Homqvist’s leg started swelling, and the pain became even more intense, and as panicky caddies started calling for the medics, the Swedish golfer did the only logical thing she could think of…she cut open the spider bite with a golf tee in order to squeeze out the venom. Makes sense, in a John Rambo sort of way. From Golf Digest… As Holmqvist’s leg started to swell and the pain became intense, she made the quick decision to take matters into her own hands (she’d just been informed that a Black Widow bite can kill a child in as little as 30 minutes). She pulled a tee out of her pocket (“it was the only thing I had handy,” she told Svensk Golf) and used it to cut open the wound so she could squeeze out the venom and keep it from spreading inside her body. “A clear fluid came out,” she said. “It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible.” But Homqvist’s adventure doesn’t end there. After weighing her options, she decided to finish out the round, despite the pain and worry, shooting a 74, a great score considering the circumstances, but not good enough to make the tournament. At least this makes her the clear cut winner of the “Toughest Golfer in the World” award, previously held by a Canadian golfer who played 36 holes after being trampled by a bull moose. Got bit by a poisonous black widow today on course, a caddy said that people die from it and that I should seek medical attn.. I shot 74.
